parts needed to swap 1.6l 4 cylinder to 2.5l klze

Post by bradb2012 »

I'm looking to swap a 1.6l 4 cylinder with a 2.5l klze 6 cylinder...could you point me to a place where they have done this already and know of what all needs to be swapped out or let me know by experience what all parts I will need off the v6 to swap it over to my 1.6l model?

Parts:
V6 mx-3 harness (92-93) (only the engine bay harness)
Kl31 ECU (BEST but can also use KL01 Kl07 or the K8 ecu's)
Shift linkage
Transaxle cradle and crossmember
V6 transmission/clutch/flywheel (mx-3, probe, mx6, 0r 626 with the V6)
V6 mx-3 motor/transmission mounts (ALL 4)
You must have the portion on the passanger side of the engine bay where the motor mount seats from a V6 mx-3

And welcome to the forum.

It can/has been done, but it is a pretty involved process. With the 4 cyl model your best bet is the BP/BPT swap.
If you're really trying to get a KLZE, grab a v6 GS model and start from there. It'll be cheaper and a lot less work.
Wings on an MX3? What are you thinking?

I personally did this swap and the easiest thing you can do is get a v6 parts car. Otherwise you will spend an are and a leg for all the parts listed above. It is a lot of work but it can be done.

hey thanks for the quick replys and yes I understand its alot of work. I will try to find a v6 parts car but they are very hard to come by around here and the junk yards that do have them will not sell the whole car....greedy turds lol Anyways here is my list so far of parts without having a parts car:

KLZE ECU KL31 CHIP $30.00 USD
92-93 Mazda MX-3 GS V6 5-spd ABS Front Main Harness $350.00
92 93 MAZDA MX-3 MANUAL TRANSMISSION 6 CYL $575.00
EXEDY CLUTCH KIT SET 92-94 MAZDA MX-3 1.8L V6 $117.99 USD
AMS AUTOMOTIVE 167913 Flywheel/Flexplate $63.53 USD
*find motor/transmission mounts +side of passenger engine bay that seats the motor mount from gs model*
*FIND SHIFT LINKAGE*
*find transaxle cradle and crossmember*
total cost so far: 1135.53 (for parts above)
+$900.00 for KLZE motor
=$2035.53 total so far (not including transaxle cradle/crossmember, shift linkage, or motor mounts)
sound about right?

Don't forget the v6 gauge cluster and radiator as well. You will also come across hoses and lines that you'll need as well. From my experience in doing this swap, the time spent finding the parts car is well worth it. Even if you have to travel it will be way cheaper and easier to have the car on hand.

ya im doing that now, found one for around $600 but the cost to ship it from the west to the midwest is around $900-$1300 (rough estimate)...still looking. I will note those new parts and keep you updated...will be pulling the old motor soon. Thanks, and if anybody has anything else to add whose had experience then feel free.

heres my estimates, im currently building a bpt for my rs
bpt build=1500$ not including motor and trans

for my friends RS to KL swap
chipped tuned kl31 ecu=60
motor/trans=400 (includes all mounts)
wiring harness=40
transaxle cradle=20
radiator=50
cv axles=25 each
shift linkage=20
so for junkyard plus craigslist parts his total is 640$
not bad eh?
