mx3 manual 1.6L transmission on base. need to change...

Post by wednesdayslatest »

okay so i just got my mx3 back on the road after two years had to do the head gasket an i got into an accident an had to pay everything out of pocket. anywayss so i change the neutral safety switch the lights work but now it wont go into reverse BS im pissed but anyways i dont wanna spend 525 and 150 for SH on ebay for another tranny. anyone know what kind of tranny i could put in it? it makes no difference as long it will drive with the stock base equipment. ill have to go look thru the junkyards and such but i need to know exactly what im looking for. might as well grab the shift linkage too because mine is all rusted out....i put almost everything new on that so far i put so much work into it and it seems like ive done nothing. i dont got the money to spend to get a new one.....i realize i had a stage clutch in there im thinkin i could put another stage when i swap the tranny idk why it doesnt go into reverse its just stuck and wont shift into the gear but everything else works completely fine. anyone got any answers let me know asap i need to figure this out i already got a red R n i needa fix it before i go back for inspection

Literally any 1.6 or 1.8 Mazda from 90-97 on a similar platform. 323, Mx-3, protege, escort, aspire, etc etc.

shift linkage is car specific due to the stabilizer bar Mazda uses, the distance between the shifter and transmission may not be the same between chassis. MX-3 is unique, but if you're lucky one might be similar enough. Measuring tape between points should tell you well enough. a quarter inch out shouldn't do much but change where the shift lever sits. (may naturally be closer to dash or further back)

Before you try anything else, though.

Start car. Try reverse. No go? put it in third, and then try reverse again. leave clutch in for the whole process. That usually works. Reverse is not a synchronized gear, in any F or G series transmission, so theres a chance the dog teeth don't line up.

This may help you out.

thanks a lot. well i see theyre all interchangeable so thats good and i found an auto mx3 looks like a DOHC at this junkyard but i just realized it was an auto so i guess thats out of the question im not sure where to find one i see on ebay thatll costs like 700 just for all that. i dont really want to take a tranny from a sedan because the lower gear ratios id rather get an mx3 but every junkyard around here has crushed them pretty much and screwing me over a few years ago with body parts. i know there is a few mx3 out there idk if theyre standard or not but i called over 40 places maybe 2 or 3 had at least one. prob all with front end damage because i couldnt get the front end frame shell parts. then i had to find the fenders. its a real pain but at least its not a civic :) damn things get broken into stolen on a daily basis cuz they all got the same car lol and the 03 civics engines blow around 180 190 lol this thing is just gonna be a pain i need to get it done SOON and get this reject sticker off so i dont get attention driving dont need that. i half way standed down the roof and i guess whoever had it before did a bondo job and sprayed it i need to sand it all down and redo it before their painjob was all peeling off. and the nutral safety switch harness isint getting power idk why they hardwired it to something else so i just used the same wires. i had to hardwire a horn because i cant find my horn wire i didnt disconnect it so idk where it got put. thats why i hate when other ppl work on my car you never know what they do. i got it with a bown headgasket didnt realize it drove it for a ayear then it died and did the headgasket put a new head because it was cracked and now here i am one accident and headgasket later i hope this is going to be the end of my major problems i only got 124k on it you know whoever had it raced it out bad. still need to put new swaybar links and i want to put a stage 2 clutch i was looking at the F1 brand. dont know if thats any good but im thinking about putting that its 125 on ebay. but i really need to find a tranny first then get that all done. when i first got the car it must of had a stage clutch because it was nice and strong but i wore it out to the max it wouldnt drive anymore it died on the highway just went slower and slower and slower and then stop. stuck all night till the morning me and some girl gonna goto eat at dennys LMAO

stay away from F1 clutches, they're total crap. stick with OEM Exedy.

'stage' clutches are only good for ricer math. They aren't a real unit of measure.

What you need to look at is the torque rating for the clutch. Get one thats maybe 20 lb-ft greater than what you expect to put down. In a stock B6, a whopping 100 ft lbs, so 120 is pleeenty.

The 92-93 RS trans is direct bolt in, the 94+ will have the speedometer sensor issue. It still works, though.

don't pay $400 for a trans. pay $100 tops.

do you understand what I'm saying about 'stage' clutches?

Its a marketing gimmick. 'stage' is meaningless. look at the TQ rating of the clutch, you're aiming for 100-120lb-ft.

The good one I suggested was an OEM exedy, specifically the Exedy 10043.

I also have a used one that I'd let go for $50 + S&H, come to think of it. It has maybe 20k km on it.

On the V6 trans anyway, if you forget to put in a washer or tighten the reserve switch too much, it'll prevent you from getting into reverse. I don't remember if you can put the neutral switch accidentally in there isntead

sorry to say i am new to this forum i have a 93 xm3 1.6 base SOHC 4cyl i called everywhere in ma in nh and the cheapest ive heard was 450 anyone got any better prices i got paypal and let me take a quick look at the specific item i really dont understand much about it all i know is that when i put the clutch up half way it pulled it into the gear nice and stiff it pulled me into my seat in everygear this one doesnt do that at all ...i was thinking to try and bleed the clutch after this tranny i need to get another caliper....i was hoping to maybe convert it to rear disc brakes or if it would even be worth it. i know im going to have to re do all the brake lines and all that its all rusted the brakes need to be bled its low but it stops i put new pads on the old rotors that were sitting for like 2 years.

What were you driving before if you think the SOHC is putting you in your seat?

If you post a WTB (please read the sticky in the WTB section first) and put your state in the tag, its likely someone can get you a trans to your front door for 1/2 to 1/4 of that.
