Found a few non Ethanol gas stations
I got curious, since I hate E in gas (it ruins gas mileage, and performance). I found a few places nearby, the closest being a marina. Tomorrow, I'm going to see if I can buy the gas. I'll probably have to bring 2 5 gallon cans. I imagine that it's not high octane, so I'll have to buy race gas, too. It will be a PITA, but probably worth it. The race gas place is not far from me, either.
I read that in Canada, they don't put E in Shell V-power, but can't find any info on it for here. Does anyone know?

Re: Found a few non Ethanol gas stations
I know the ethanol *content* is lower in premium gasolines. The biggest question is if the low octane fuels are subject to ethanol vs. the high octane. This probably doesn't affect fuel purchased at a marina, but if any other location is a automobile gas station, just be sure to inquire which grades are subject to ethanol... that's usually where they get you. I have a "midnite oil" station that advertises no ethanol, but it's premium grade fuel only.

It's like this:fowljesse wrote:I read that in Canada, they don't put E in Shell V-power, but can't find any info on it for here. Does anyone know?
87 Octane - contains up to 10% ethanol
89 Octane - contains up to 5% ethanol
91 Octane (V-Power) and higher - no ethanol

My ZE only get Premium. Ethanol is only good for E tests other than that it's a total rip off.

Re: Found a few non Ethanol gas stations
That's nice and all but the price difference between regular and premium is a much greater offset than the little bit of extra mileage you'd get out of having 10% less ethanol. If we're talking strictly from a monetary perspective (money spent vs. distance travelled) then regular 87 octane is the best value.Daninski wrote:My ZE only get Premium. Re: Found a few non Ethanol gas stations
I guess that depends if your engine anti knock sensor is constantly retarding your timing because of the lower octane fuel. Your injectors stay cleaner and you get to experience the pride and ego boost of standing at the pump smiling at all the other regualar users while you pump 'the good stuff'._-Night-Shade-_ wrote:That's nice and all but the price difference between regular and premium is a much greater offset than the little bit of extra mileage you'd get out of having 10% less ethanol. Re: Found a few non Ethanol gas stations
Actually, it's the opposite.SuperK wrote:I know the ethanol *content* is lower in premium gasolines.
Ethanol is added to gasoline as a cheap alternative to ETBE (ethyl tertiary-butyl ether) in the states where MTBE (Methyl tertiary-butyl ether) has been banned due to concerns of it contaminating the water supply.
Both MTBE and ETBE (and their cheap alternatives, methanol and ethanol) are added to gasoline in a dual function as oxygenates and octane boosters. That means that, the higher the octane rating of the gasoline, the higher the ethanol content.
That said, the whole "lower mileage of ethanol gas" speech is BS. Before ethanol being used as a gas additive, methanol (the cheap alternative to MTBE) was used. The energy density of ethanol is 24 MJ/L, while that of methanol is 15.6 MJ/L, which means that ethanol laced gasoline will actually give you a HIGHER mileage than methanol laced gas.
Here's a list of states that have banned the use of MTBE
http://www.epa.gov/mtbe/420b04009.pdf
Finally, a (very expensive) alternative to the use of ethanol in gasoline would be the use of pure iso-octane. I don't know of any brand of gas that uses it, but those who buy the BS about ethanol can try and find one. Expect it to be much more expensive than ethanol gas, though...

Re: Found a few non Ethanol gas stations
We have fuel that has neither methanol nor ethanal and you know as well as I that straight gas has more btu's than methanol nor ethanal contaminated fuel. Now it's true it boosts octane but at a cost, less power and less mileage per tank. I'm saying this because I've experienced it my own cars and of course, I Googled it a long time ago to confirm.

Re: Found a few non Ethanol gas stations
True. "straight" gas has an energy density of 34 MJ/L. That is 13.3% higher than straight ethanol. But it also has a lower octane rating than ethanol "contaminated" gasoline, and it just wouldn't work in modern cars, unless another octane booster was used. So the alternatives would be iso-octane (expensive), tetra-ethyl lead (highly toxic) or methanol (contaminating and potential carcinogen).Daninski wrote: you know as well as I that straight gas has more btu's than methanol nor ethanal contaminated fuel.
Meanwhile, gasoline with 10% ethanol has an energy density of 33.6 MJ/L, which is 0.119% lower than "straight" gas, so the whole mileage controversy is just bu!!sh1t, and your experience can just be attributed to the placebo effect, aggravated by your Alzheimer's.

I'd have a snappy come back right now if I hadn't already forgot what you said,,,,not because of Alzheimer but because of your insignificance.
