Installing indiglows.

Hi Guys,

I have 2 questions regarding the indiglow gauges.

They need a 12v source and a ground.

Is it possible to hook it up to the factory switch for diming the dashlights ? Would it be possible to control the indiglows or are they going to be messed up ?

2nd... If not possible; Can I also take a 12v / ground from the back of the dash itself ? There are a lot of printcircuits and bolts to attach the gauges in the dash_housing.

Bingo. It's exactly how I did it. If you wire the red wire from the inverter to the red from the dimmer, and then the black from the inverter to the ground from the dimmer, you're golden. You can even tuck the inverter box behind in the hollow area because the actual dimmer switch will control the actual indiglow gauges. If you like I can take a video of how it works. I prefer to have 2 separate dimming systems as I have a "stealth" mode (all red lights) and my "normal" mode of indiglos on the cluster and HVAC.

Why do you want to have it ?

So it means if you're heaving your lights turned on, you can turn of the indiglows ?

Yes I can turn off the indiglows separately... there are times when I am driving at night when the indiglows are too bright so I will turn them off and then I will just have red. I changed all the bulbs in my switches and in the cluster to red for night time driving... I can still read everything but it's just not as distracting so I can focus on the road/driving.

It's personal preference... maybe I'm just weird??

I spliced my indoglows into my dimmer switch, that way when I turn the revers glow down and my HVAC up I can see the gauges with the stock lights. I took the green tabs off and made them white so it works pretty well.

My gauges don't have a seperate dimmer.

They are from moman.pl

Could I still hook them up to the dimmer ?

I don't understand anything from that page hahah.
SO I take it there is an inverter box with an on and off switch but no dimmer? If you had a dimmer it'd be attached to the on/off switch. If you don't have the dimmer attached to the on/off switch, I'd recommend you splice it into the dimmer regardless. You can still control it from the dimmer I think.

this is what rob's dimmer looks like

The on/off switch is connected to the dimmer dial which than goes to the inverter box

but yeah, if yours don't have a dimmer than you should splice it into the stock dimmer switch as it will work and dim with your other interior lights

BTW, could you please take a picture of the moman's gauges for me?
the front, back, and inverter box and such, i've been wanting a set for a while just haven't had a job for a while XD
also what color glow did you get? blue?

But as i can see in the picture; mines are different. It just has the inverterbox and some stabilizer in between.

There is no controller to dim them or any on/off switch.

Do not dim your glow gauges by varying their source voltage, you'll fry them.

The inverter needs 12v all the time, you dim it by dimming the inverted signal, which usually comes with the inverter.

well that's good to know, i figured the gauges wouldn't work at all if it wasn't getting 12v so when the dimming worked on rob's car i just assumed it worked

There was discussion about this a long time ago, cause even SpeedHut's gauges suggest against it, but many people over the years reported that they've had no problem with it that way.

Myself, I modified the stock dimmer and used that rheostat to replace the one from the SpeedHut gauges. I could get away with that because I had the HVAC panel as well and did my own wiring to put in blue LED's in the switches. The only thing I couldn't dim from there was the clock in the cluster. The stock dimmer is non-linear, so it was super sensitive to use, but it worked, and kept the OEM look. I didn't want to have at ugly extra dimmer on the dash. Mine also did the blue/green switch, but all I wanted was blue, but I didn't care for access to the switch.

When I look at the electrical diagram in the manual (at home) it looks like I can take wire 2L and 2K for the voltage and ground on the back of the dash.

If I hook it up like that there wouldn't be a need to unplug them when the dash comes out.

Can anybody help me confirm this ? I tried to find the electrical diagram on this site that indicates where the dimmer goes to but can't find it.
