JDMChris' - 96 V6 GS (K8) - Rage Red - Worklog

Post by JDMChris »

I'm a bit late as ive done a lot of work before finding this section. But here it is.

Make: MAZDA
Year: 1996
Type: GS
Motor: K8
Color: Rage Red
Milage: 325,000k :)

First thing i have to say is HOLY MILAGE!! lol
It does have a lot of kilometers but runs great and it was kept in good shape (looks really clean).

Before i got a hold of it:

Aftermarket Springs (Not sure what make)
Alarm System
Lip (Again, not sure from what)
Aftermarket steering wheel with a Mazdaspeed horn cap.
Short Shifter (stock shifter knob)
Alteza tail lights (also came with stock taillights)
Original Mazda Battery (LOL! - i was like whaaa?)
Exhaust, Muflet, Tip (all welded together, no rust)
Ractive Air Filter

Exerything else, STOCK!
stock mazda 15" alloy rims
stock rear low-pro wing
stock mudguards
stock motor (k8- or atleast i think..)
stock MX3 floor mats

How much did i pick it up for? i paid 1300.00 @280,000 ish (was asking 1800.00)

The first thing i did to it is get new breaks, wiper blades, oil, you know.. the works.

the whole car came red.. well semi-faded red. all the plastic looked pink.
I painted the rear wing, side mirrors, lip, mud gard and rims Glossy Black. Re-Painted the whole car Rage Red (stock color)
With the clear over both the red car and black rims... really makes it pop.. Looks great.

So, here are a few things ive done:

1) Re-Painted the Car (Rage Red + Black)

2) Bodywork

The car is painted in "Rage Red"
I Started off by Painting the mirrors, front lip, front mud guards, rear wing, and rims glossy black.

It looks pretty good. with clear over it, it looks great.

just started on the body work..
Here is a pic showing a bit of the passenger side before the work started.

Here are some pics of the work..

I used short strand fiberglass body filler... imo, it works better than bondo. To finish it off, used some fine finishing putty. The picture above is it all done with a cote of sandable primer.

Put on 2 coats of the base coat..

It still needs another 2 coats of base and some clear to get the shine back. Looks pretty good.

I also started on the front hood... there was a pretty nice dent from a rock or something. i also took off the badge.. gunna hang it from my rear view mirror.

WILL POST FINISHED BODYWORK PICTURES WHEN I TAKE THEM LOL

3) Custom Audio System

At first, i had stock speakers (6.5" front and back) and a budget system.

3 years ago, i spend about $200 on my Pioneer Deck. Not sure what model it is, if i find out i will update.
I also have a set of 12" subs running in a semi-ported box.
Powering those subs is a ___w amp (will update later)

Image

The whole system cost me about $400. It was well worth the money. There is nothing wrong with it as it is now. But a friend of mine just finished up with his system and it puts mine to shame.

So i finally decided to put some money aside for a system of my own.
Also, what i have in mind will give me my truck back so.. yea :)

The first thing i did is remove the spare tire and grinded off its mounting piece.
After that, i then laid a Dynamatt type sound insulator (and de-rattler). I fully covered the wheel well and the bumber wall.
Image
I should have taken more pics when the job was done but i was too busy working on the box.

The Box itself, is about 7" Deep, 20" Long and __" wide (i forgot the width)
Image
Image
The top plate is 3/4" MDF and the rest of the box is 1/2"

The Sub i chose, is a 12" JL Audio W1V2 @ 4Ohmz being powered by a GM-D7400M Pioneer Monoblock Class D Amp.
Image
Image

I then cut the top piece of MDF and cut out the hole for the sub to peek out. I placed 1" foam spacers between the box and top piece of MDF.

Unfortunately, i didnt take any pics of this itself.. so here is what it looks like in the trunk.

As you probably noticed, i mounted my amp behind my tail lights.. worked out too, was able to tuck the wires maaad cleanly.
Image

I also Just installed a Cap.. cleanly mounted in the jack area place.. lol

Take a look at the finished job:

4) Changed Water pump
The pump itself didnt go but it sounded like its bearings were done. When i took it out, it was stiff and grinded when turned.
OMG WAS THAT A PAIN TO CHANGE.. everything is in the way.

5) Changed the alternator
Got it quoted for 255.00 and paid 134.00 tax included.

6) Changed both rear strut caps
One broke thru so i decided to change both.
LOL then i forgot to remove my vice grips from my shock itself.. it atayed clamped for about 2 weeks.

(Also, can anyone tell from the pic what springs i got? i dont know.)

More to come...

Red makes me think dropzones, but dropzones aren't progressive rate springs like yours (I think that's the terminology used), unless they have them out now.

very nice job on the sub box, I have to make one like that for my car as I do not like my trunk being taken up by the 2 10" subs I have in there, I have a 12" alpine type s I may use instead and do a single sub setup like that or opt to mold them into the pockets behind the rear wheel wells. Could you get me the dimensions you used for your box so I have an idea of where I want to start with it?

Yes they are red. And what are progressive springs?
