KLDE swap

Post by Jforce »

hi,

so my K8 Engine has some issues a lot of enige noises, not sure if harmfull but cant be good either. U can feel the engine shaking a little on stationair, also it shakes on low rpm when accelarating. Its not real bad, but still

so i got

-valve ticking
-some ticking from the camshaft, that thing where the cambelt is on, dont know how its called in english.
-a constant sqeeck (but not from any of the belts)
- and some minor shaking

so the point is i'm kinda thinking to swap to an KLDE not klze. (klde swap is somewhat cheaper)

now i've got some questions and i hope someone can help me out.

1. My mx-3 is '95, the ecu is labeled: k838.18.881a. Is this OBD-1 or OBD-2? (if it is obd1 than question 3 is non relevant, and nr 2 only for the k8 parts)

2. A guy from my country says has swapped an KLDE in an '98 mx-3, he used: K8 ignition, k8 ecu, k8 airflow meter. No changes made further, so is this possible an does this run optimal?

3. Is there a way to chip OBD-2? cause how can people tune cars (not only mx) that are 95+?

I hopr someone can help me out.

Should be OBDII

No, need to swap to a KLDE airflow meter, otherwise it won't make any adjustments for the larger engine, still thinking it's a 1.8

No, no chips. You can't tune them unless you get a piggy back system, but the OBDII system is quite smart, they run well with a DE with the KLDE airflow meter.

apperently the k838.18.881a is different, because u someone at my mx-3 club says he has chipped this ecu.

he's running KLZE.

is searched this forum too and there's some talk about this ecu, its really confusing.
In the UK:

'93 - K838-18-881A
'94 on - K857-18-881
that would mean k838 where build 1993 so OBD1

what's the ecu number of 96-98 models? is it also k838.18.881a?

And what about using an OBD-2 KLDE Ecu from an '97 626, Probe, mx6. Is that possible or does the mx-3 wiring harnass not fit this ECU.

and what does runnig well mean in terms of hp en torque. would i still get 160 + hp and 150+ torque?

Well, easiest way to check, OBDI one has 3 connectors on the ECU, OBDII had 4. If you have 3, than you can maybe chip it, but definitely get ont that is chippable and swap it in.

No, those OBDII systems use a differeny wiring, the ECU's are not compatible.

Yes, but hard to say, every car and engine is different, but theoretically yes.

so iv'e checked the ECU, it has 3 yellow plugs, plugged into it. On the passeger side(right side).

Also the diagnostics connector is under the hood, behind the battery.

And the indentification plate says EA90, wich is produced from 1993-1996, according the allmazda.net

what do you mean by this, even if its obd1 there is still a change it cant be chipped. And i need to swap an ECU from an mx-3 that is chipable?

Sounds like he's from the UK. OBD-II was mandated in North America. Never heard of an OBD-II Mx-3 from the UK.

i've found an klze, so im probally going to swap that engine.
took some pics of my ecu(see K838...).

I will also have an KL-31 included with the klze buy.

but i dont know if an K834 ignition works with an KL-31 ECU, as the klze has the KL-01 ignition.
so i've got these options:

Chipped k838 + K834
Chipped k838 + Kl-01
KL-31 + Kl-01
KL-31 + K834

K838.18.881A:

That ECU should be chipable.
