MX-3 Audio Project - Custom Sub Box / New Sub, Amp, Speakers

Post by JDMChris »

Right now, i got stock speakers (6.5" front and back) and a budget system.

3 years ago, i spend about $200 on my Pioneer Deck. Not sure what model it is, if i find out i will update.
I also have a set of 12" subs running in a semi-ported box.
Powering those subs is a ___w amp (will update in the morning)

Image

The whole system cost me about $400. It was well worth the money. There is nothing wrong with it as it is now. But a friend of mine just finished up with his system and it puts mine to shame.

So i finally decided to put some money aside for a system of my own.
Also, what i have in mind will give me my truck back so.. yea :)

SO HERE IS THE PLAN:

I'm going to be replacing the stock speakers for 4 blaupunkt speakers
I'm also going to be replacing my 2 12" subs for a single 12" JL Audio W1V2
For the sub, im going to be making a custom box to fit the spare tire wheel well.
Running the sub, im gunna find a Monoblock Class D Amp. Not sure what yet.. Any suggestions?

For the sub box, it will be a sealed square box inside the spare tire well, it will have the sub off-center to make it the center of the trunk floor. On top of that, large piece of MDF, shaped to fit the entire trunk with a cut out for the sub, all wrapped in carpet. Over the sub, a JL Audio Guard.

To prevent rattle, i can get a good deal on dynomat or even sprayfoam might work. not sure yet.

Ive got the idea up in my head.. i will post back as it progresses
Any suggestions on amps or anything like that.. lemme know

Make it a 15 if you really wanna go deaf.

I have a JBL 12 with a decent amp that hits damn good for an Mx3, I imagine with a lil dynamat I could turn it up more though.

My friend has a Nissan Xterra and he has a 15" Diamond D3 in it... He parks next to me and my rearview mirror vibrates sideways.

My sub does that too... but not 10 feet away through an Xterra and an Mx3.

OK, finally getting some time to update this post.

So, like i said earlier.. placing a custom Sub Box (Sealed) in the Spare Tire well.

The first thing i did is remove the spare tire and grinded off its mounting piece.
After that, i then laid a Dynamatt type sound insulator (and de-rattler). I fully covered the wheel well and the bumber wall.
Image
I should have taken more pics when the job was done but i was too busy working on the box.

The Box itself, is about 7" Deep, 20" Long and __" wide (i forgot the width)
Image
Image
The top plate is 3/4" MDF and the rest of the box is 1/2"

The Sub i chose, is a 12" JL Audio W1V2 @ 4Ohmz being powered by a GM-D7400M Pioneer Monoblock Class D Amp.

I then cut the top piece of MDF and cut out the hole for the sub to peek out. I placed 1" foam spacers between the box and top piece of MDF.

Unfortunately, i didnt take any pics of this itself.. so here is what it looks like in the trunk.

Image

As you probably noticed, i mounted my amp behind my tail lights.. worked out too, was able to tuck the wires maaad cleanly.
Image

All i have to do now, is wrap the top piece of MDF in carpet and im done. i have to wait to do that as the local fabric store is closed till Aug 1st.

What do yall think? Clean Build, Sounds Great and i have my trunk back!

I always have two concerns about subs in the tire well.

All the gravel in the entire trunk will find its way onto the sub and bounce around.
I'd be terrified some cargo would fall over onto the sub. Do you have a grille for it?

I found the trunk cover really muffled the sound of my speakers, any difference in yours with the trunk cover in or out? I was actually going to make a cover and use black 'Pet' screen (heavier and thicker) in the middle to allow the sound to travel unimpeaded. Bass I know does act differently than mid or high range sound freqs.

i vacuumed and washed the whole trunk before hand.. and yah i have a grill. im not too worried about anything falling onto the sub itself..the grill does a good job of blocking stuff

NEUMAN
I have a 6 month old Battery. NEW

I got the cap because my system killed my alternator, which killed my battery.

It was sucking so much juice from my bat, my alternator was working overtime to try to keep up. thats why the cap was needed
