Open diff 2 wheel burnout?

I thought that with an open diff, it only puts power to one wheel at a time, especially during traction loss... but I have been suspecting that mine spins both. The other day, I was going up a steep driveway, and gave it a little too much gas, because my car is touchy. I didn't want to lose momentum completely, so I feathered it off, but it spun for a little while. I looked to make sure I didn't do any damage, because it's a very nice driveway, and I saw 2 identical burn marks. It loses traction pretty easily taking off on turns, or powering up during turns, and feels like only 1 wheel is spinning then.
Am I not understanding open diffs correctly?

Im asuming both your wheels had equal traction so they both spun evenly.
Took the bp+t out of the mx and swapped it into a 95 escort wagon. ;)

what pox said, if both wheels have equal traction then both will spin at the same rate, while cornering its a different matter the outer wheel spins faster than the inner wheel due to differential action and the weight is not evenly distributed making one wheel have more traction than the other. To test this out simply park with one wheel on loose gravel and 1 on pavement and give it some gas the one on the gravel will spin more than the one on pavement.
