Check engine light question

Hey lookin for some help. My 92 mx3 has a check engine light on and was wondering how you diognose obd1 cars like my mx3 cause my dads scan tool wont work on it since it only works on obd11 so if anyone can help me with this i would appreciate it. Thanks.
