Blinkers Turn on When Turning Steering Wheel :(

Post by onlytrueromeo »

I need some help. Ever since I did the dash swap on my car, my blinkers have been messed up. When I turn to the right for example and then back left my left blinker comes on. It doesn't always happen, and I can't get it to happen with the car sitting still. I am hesitant to take the whole steering wheel assembly apart because I don't want to break anything, and I don't know what I'm looking for.

Anyone know what I should try?

I actually just got done taking it apart. It's not wiring at all. I actually can't figure out how the piece that is making it do what it's doing got that way. I took some pictures to try to help explain. The white "fin" things in the picture seemingly do nothing but get in the way and are causing the problem. They hit the black piece on the right and knock the signal on. I want to know if I can cut them off or shave the bottoms down w/o any adverse side effects. These aren't the pieces that turn the blinker off when you complete the turn, those are on the inside and hit the white plastic lever you see behind the circular plastic piece w/ the fins. When the steering wheel is loosely fitted, everything works fine, its only when enough pressure is applied to the plastic cylinder that it compresses the spring enough and hits the plastic lip beneath it on the right.

Also everyone drool at my center console which I just finished putting back together.

If they're there, it's for a reason. I wouldn't cut them if I were you.
Try to figure out what are they there for.

Nice console... 8)

That thing with white 'fins' pops right off. Just pull and wiggle. Its repsonsible for the auto shut off on the blinkers.

Just look and play with it, you'll eventually see whats happening. Its one of those things that is very complicated, at least to explain. You'll figure it out, you're a smart guy.

I pulled it off already, and I know how the inner fins work to shut the blinkers off. I can't see what the big outer fins are for, and why the bottoms of them hit that black piece. When I put the wheel on tight, it compresses it too much so it rubs the black piece and turns the blinkers on when i turn the wheel. The only way it doesn't do that is if I don't tighten the wheel down all the way, which is NOT what I want to do.

I know that centre piece is different on cruise and non cruise models. on cruise models, the steering wheel buttons run though a little ring, as well as the horn, and a different centre peice is needed to link to that ring.

Can you see any reason why you can't modify the centre peice so it doesn't catch?

I fixed the problem, but with my own suggestion. I had to file/sand the bottom of the fins down a bit so they wouldn't rub anymore. It works perfectly now. Ryan you were right about not being able to cut off the fins entirely, I forgot about the cruise ring I had to remove to get access to that piece. If I cut them off, blinkers or something might be affected. Sanding them down on the bottom less than an 1/8th of an inch worked perfect for me. To anyone who reads this post in the future, I would def. recommend doing the same if you can't fix it any other way. Just a little on the bottom of those "fins".

I had that problem when I changed my steering wheel to an after market one. I had to put a 1/4 inch extender on it so they would not rub the automatic turn of blinky things.

Filing them down works 2!!

I almost put a washer on it, but there was a channel for the spring.

glad you figured it out... I had this problem when I changed to an aftermarket wheel and figured it out.

I may need to go in and readjust it or file it down since when it is really hot out the steering wheel gets "tighter" and the auto blinkers pop on... :freak:

Yes, the problem definitely gets worse when the car is baking in the sun. Filing the bottoms down just like you di w/ the gauge needles for when you put on glow gauges is what worked! Did not sacrifice anything.

I didn't have to file down the needles to put the gauges on...

Do you mean to shave down here about an 1/8 of an inch and it will get rid of my auto blinkers? Will my blinkers still turn off when I turn the steering wheel back?
