Which engine is this

Post by mok86 »

Seller has given me this picture, says its a swapped out jdm miata engine. The block has "b55" on the side and on the valve cover it has some japanese lettering. Is this the jdm b6ze 120hp engine from a miata? I'm guessing it was possible that he swapped valve covers... is there any way to be sure besides dynoing?

hard to tell.. it looks very stock b6... but there is something off. But I'd never trust someone who thinks it's a good idea to paint an exhaust mani.... let a lone. 2 or 3 times. One would also think that if you're putting in a jdm engine you'd upgrade the intake (not including fancy-smancy flames).

Um, you should be buy a BP... not a B6 with yellow flames on the intake.

First off painting intake manifolds do not make you go faster, and second you want a cold intake charge not a hot flamey one. :twisted:

No that just looks like a normal b6 from an mx3.
The intake manifold is pointing the wrong way, and the flanges between the 2 heads are different.

Id steer clear of that engine, there is no way its a JDM miata engine unless the guy had all the parts
to convert it to a B6 94+. Even such the water to radiator location on those is right under the
cam gears.

that engine is from the 94 mx-3.

95 mx-3's have a honeycomb matting on the head, it's not smooth.

in no way possible is that from a miata. the valve covers are not swappable. The distributor is on the other cam.

If the ticking matches the RPM's and goes away as the car heats up, its HLAs.

well... the ticking doesn't actually go away .. One of the times i couldn't even hear it when the car is cold . OR the car is warm. but either way it did not have any ticking before. Do i need a new engine? how could i fix this?

generally... we just don't worry about it. Even the V6's tick. The HLA is the little spring loaded foot that the cams use to depress the springs.

HLA is hydraulic lash adjuster, whose intent is to maintain zero valve clearance.

If you know a good scrap yard nearby, and there's a low milage Mazda engine in there, you can simply steal some good ones and pop them in your engine. Its not hard, but you need torque wrenches....

Here's my writeup...

http://ww.mx-3.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php ... de#p477673" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And if you register at ClubProtege, here's another....

http://www.clubprotege.com/forum/showth ... =HLA+clean" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

People also reccommend a good engine flush, like seafoam.

Good luck :wink:

Oh thanks so much. It makes so much more sense now since reading all that write -up, yeah i just got worried because i am not familiar with manual cars and the ticking doesn't sound healthy whenever i want to rev . But anyway, yea i will look for a yard and find some lifters or i can flush the engine.
