Its probably a relay, so that your cargo lamp turns off when you close the hatch, maybe some other things... Why it doesn't close? I'm not sure. Is something bent? Were you driving with it open? Describe it a bit better, does it resist or just clunk metal on metal with not chance of fitting in? Is the latch in the actual hatch locked? Like, I know on doors if you push the physical lock over when the door is open, you can't close it. Maybe somethign similar?
Thats my guesses

Guess that's a switch to tell if the hatchback is open. Will check it when I get some time. Am going out of town, padre island, for a week or so.

It closes now, the top metal thing was bent so it would not open, ie push the bottom level so it would open. The front cable was staying stuck in the open position.

I disconnected the front cable, ie the one the opens the hatchback ( on the left of the front seat) hatchback opener lever?

The front cable is not working. It stays in the open position. Guess I need to put some lubricant in there or get a new cable. Will work on it later.
