Car RPMs to high?

HI,

Looked at a 96 v6 MX3 on the weekend. At 50 mph (80km/hr) the rpms were 3000+. This can't be right? The engine sounds fine at idle.
An ideas what could be wrong? Didn't smoke, compression tested ok. Incorrect timing belt install?

Thanks

don't know but I noticed GS does about 4200 rpm at 80mph in fifth which is a little more than my miata

In the v6 mx-3 idle in neutral is about 670 rpm and in gear idle is roughly 1200 for me.

So the MX3 seems to have pretty close gear ratios, especialy in 1st and 2nd

I was in 5th gear , 50mph and rpms were 3000ish.
Thanks for the responses ... it seemed like high rpms for a v6 too me.

over 3000 at 80km/h thats revving a little too high, i will double check tomorrow but i think my car does a little over 3000 rpm at 100km/h, so 80 should be a little below 3k

I know mine is just shy of 4000rpm at 75 in 5th, so 3000rpm at 50 doesnt sound unreasonable.

alright, so i checked yesterday and my car is dead on 2.5k at 80km/h in 5th gear. and dead on 3k at 95km/h in 5th gear unless my car is revving too low your car is revving a little too high
