Gutted mx3

Post by 93sohc5speed »

Whats up guys, thanks for the help in advance. This post just has a few questions bout swapping in a BP (93 1.6 SOHC Manual). Also some info about and pics of my car, and what Ive done, for you to know exactly what Im working with. I just wanna make sure I half way know what to do. Ive done a research on this board for a while about the swap and the MX3 in general. Having a 95 MX6 LS before this MX3 getting usto the speed difference has been hard. But I still love the car. Anyway I've been gutting the MX3 haha. Ive had my mx3 for like a year only paid 500$ for it, has 207,000 somthin miles on it, lol and I have 2 other cars. So I decieded to gut all of the interior out, you might think im crazy haha heres some pics. (sorry so large)

Image

Took seats out and took all carpet out, course seats replaced after carpet took out. :). I hate all that gunk on the floor, I'll mess with it later lol.

Image

Dash out, maybe Ill fix the wires later. Im gonna replace the cluster with aftermarket tach, temp, amp, fuel and oil psi gauges. No need for speedo, can tell speed good enough with tach.

Image

(eww, see the nasty body damage) Took the hatch off, rear end is light as a feather lol. Fun on dirt roads :) :) .The interior all around the rear is also strippted out including back seats, back seat belts, all carpet, all the plastic. The car is just a shell pretty much, all stereo equipment gone, automatic seat belts, etc..., etc... Only thing still there is headliner, door panels, and the thing around the e-brake cause I like the cupholder. Tho it is ackwerdly placed hehe.

Image

Suitable replacement for the hatch hahaha, plus it flys in the wind while driving lol. See my nice custom frame reinforcement made of cheap bungie cords, lol j/k i know its useless, removed them later and used 2 of them to hold a box of jumper cables and tire changing stuff, and another to hold a jug of coolant. Since my radiator leaks a lil :( lol.

Image

Relocated Coolant Overflow Jug for intake piping. Held in place with good ol bungie cable, hehe. Maybe this move will come in handy when I get the bp. I will probally move it again later tho.

Image

Theres the partially lightned up engine bay. Later I think I will remove all of the A/C stuff and the heating and cooling stuff all together, preferabelly after I obtain a BP and pull the B6 hehe. I was wondering if I keep my power steering and still loose A/C. Is there a smaller belt available? Would the B6 accessory belts work for the BP??? Just curious hehe.

Ok I'll finally get to a few questions.

First I just wanna clear up a few things. If im just getting the BP I use the BP motor mounts, correct. Or do I use the stock motor mounts? Will the stock P/S pump work or will I need to obtain one from the BP? What refreshment do you reccomend for a cheap BP install besides, degreese engine, do valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, change oil, plugs, wires, dist cap, rotor, and timingbelt? There might be some gaskets and seals im missing and a water pump, but im on a budget, hehe.
Ive found a BP, well actually a few from proteges (90-94), which is what I would prefer to get it from at a local junkyard. They were all $300 plus tax and your old engine, this seems like a good deal. They had like 1 or 2 SOHC 1.8's and a few DOHC's. I didnt get mileage figures, but i asked what year one of the DOHC's was from and they said 94. Im assumeing is over 100k but as long as I can pop the valve cover off and inspect it some, I would be pretty confident. Question is there anything I should watch out for when buying a BP, like anything in specific to avoid. Also would it matter SOHC and DOHC are there any install or wiring differances. Im assuming it would be best to go with DOHC. I guess the SOHC wouldn't have VICS to wire up but I am decient with wiring so if I had to it seems like it would be easy.

Another question, would it be safe if I keep the stock trans as long as I dont launch at high rpms, etc... The stock trans is fairly decient it grinds into reverce like allot of manuals, but it doesn't pop out pf 5th or anything. So do you guys think it would be alright to just change the gear oil with somethin good like Royal Purple or somthing. I just want it to last a few months, hehe. Of cource I would upgrade the clutch, with this one

http://www.lmperformance.com/10232/.html

SPEC Stage 2 Clutch Kit For 92-93 1.6, would this be good enough with some good lubrication to make my trans last? Also is there anything different bout the MX3's clutch, Ive never changed a clutch, so is there anything important or differnt I should know that someone good with cars wouldn't know? I plan to pull engine and trans together, will I havta remove the axles? I hear axles are a pain, if so whats the best way to remove them? I plan to remove the trans, and flywheel from the B6 and bolt the flywheel and the stage 2 clutch to the BP, then bolt trans to BP and lower it in. Would it be best (if it can be done) to use axles from the protege or is that not possible or is it pointless? Do my plans sound valid?? Would everything work like this? I have never done more to a car then change a starter or valvecover gasket and thermostats you know the easy stuff. I just wanna make sure I have the correct picture of how to go about this.

Now I have a few questions about the ECU and wiringharness etc...
I dont really know much about this stuff, but I am decient with wiring and stuff, I just need to learn bout car electric systems. Ok from what Ive gathered you can get BP ECU and BP wiring harness and use them. Ok please correct me if im wrong but the wiring harness with leave the ECU and go to the sensors on the engine. Do I just clip the wires off the sensors labeling them of course, and then unplug the plug that goes to the ECU, and pull all of the wires out that went to the sensors with the plug. Then after you get engine the engine in run the wires back to there sensors, mount ecu, and plug it back in. Do I have a good enough idea about this, is this how it is, or does the wiring harness also go into stuff like the igniction switch headlight switch etc...? If it does I could still figure it out, I just wanna know if im halfway close to having the right idea hehe. If im not please help me haha :) Also Ive read you can use the SOHC stock ecu and wiring harness you just haveta open the ecu and solder the VICS. Whats this all about? Is it true, does anyone have pics or schematics of how to do this? I would like to use the BP ECU with stock wiring harness, seems like it would work! Seems to be easiest also, wiring VICS would be easy hehe. Well I guess thats all the questions I can think of right at this moment, thanks allot for the help I know its allot tho :( maybe you guys and some of my buddies can help me have a faster MX!!!

:):)

Well heres some pics, its a 93, with 119,xxx miles. Gave $2900 for it. Runs very well! To bad its auto, but has a performance mode hehe. The auto shifts very well. The only things bad Ive noticed is it sometimes squeeks when turning, when you put it in reverse the engine vibrates, maybe a mount. Sometimes when you press the brakes a certain way it shakes a lil, maybe a warpted rotor. Oh well simple stuff maybe, I hope it does well, hehe, heres some pix.

This car does great in mud and offroad situations!!! Ive sealed the disty with rtv sealant to prevent water from entering. Been plowing through creeks, and mudd holes hahahaha!!! Its so fun. Still want a bp cause more power :( lol.

wahaha, good idea!!!! hehehe. I wish I could lift it somehow. Ive been looking for 14inch all terrain tires, no luck, lol. But yea the mx would be perfect for rally imo, how easy you can throw it around is sweet haha. Just needs more power :(. But that lil 88hp sohc seems to be a decient engine for chugging around in mudd and whatnot.

Arrr, I wish mine was a gs, I would probally take a lil better care of it hahaha. Kinda wish I didnt sell my mx6 ls with a 2.5 KLDE DOHC V6 5 Speed for so cheap. I bet it would be fun offroad hehe, cause of the good amounts of torque, and 164 HP.
Mine also kinda looks lifted, in the rear anyway, cause its so light back there. I can lift one side in the back and push/slide the car around, lol. But yea its is verrry fun, beats 4 wheelin hehe. I go to this big a-- churt pit or whatever with big hills, mud pitts and a buncha wide open space. Its fun to fly up those big 90 degree hills with someone in the car, scares the hell outta them, wahaha. Ive been just plowing through small brush and whatnot haha, also ran over a few small trees, lolz! People think Im insane for doin it to the car, wahahah!! I dont have the title, so I cant ever drive it legally on the roads, cause I cant get it tagged. So why not test its true potential, lol.

LOL that's great! maybe you can get some video of it airborne or tearing through the wilderness??

I remember mine was so light too! That hatch alone has got to weigh 100 lbs or so! With the sunroof open and windows down it felt like a convertible.

Mine is my daily driver now... it's mudding days are OVER!

if you do end up changing your mind and putting the bp in wiring isn't an issue your stock wiring plugs into the bp just fine just change the ecu for better power and higher redline all of the accessories like the ps pump and stuff like that bolt on also... as to gaskets just buy a gasket set have the engine cleaned up really well then replace all of the gaskets and drop it in

Cool thanks for the info projectmx, nice to know the wiring is nothing! I still wanna swap in a BP, but right at this moment Im low on funds hehehe. I thought I killed the mazda otherday. I started it up and clouds of white smoke started blowing out of the tailpipe :O I tried to drive it and it just sputtered and coughed. Well it ended up being outta gas hahaha. So its still alive and well! My gf got a nice digital cam that can record video with sound, soon I will have some raisin hell videos maybe, :) hehehe! Well heres some pics of stuff.

Dirty SOHC POS!!!!

And about taking the hatch off, its very easy!! Only 4 bolts, I couldnt get to them with a ratchet, had to use a wrench. Before you remove the bolts you might wanna get that wiring for the 3rd brake light and rear window defrost outta the way. The easiest way is take off the plastic piece on the left side of the hatch, close to where you see the wire running into the hatch. Once removed youll see the plugs, unplug them and pull the wire out. Lift the hatch off. May help to have 2 people, hehe.
