Are my rear brakes sticking?

Post by hgallegos915 »

ok.. si I jack the car up and I can freely turn the wheel when thed handbrake is not on.. I change pads and not it takes alot of hand effort to move pads. I go to the gas station and BOOM the passenger rear brake is smoking loike crazy!.. sook i go home. No smoke.. i drive around for around 20 mins and it seems fine .. it still takes effort to turn the tire with my hand.. but well my friend rudy states this is normal (the hand turning thing) is this a sign of a caliper thats about to stick? I dont want so0mething like this slowing me down at the track . Or should i just let it be?

definitely not supposed to happen. Did you adjust ebrake cable?

I disconnected the e brake cable before I did that. I only replaced the rear passenger side because the driver side still has around 50& life.

The pad that I took out.. the inner one was gone to the metal and the outer one was at like 25% left still.. what does that mean? I drive it again and it seems fine.. maybe it got unstuck? still shouldnt be doing that right? i think its gonna hurt me at the strip :(

what do you suggest?

hey strangely enough.. the inner pad is the one thats sticking.. i went after it cooled down and its not sticking. But after i drive it and it warms up it sticks. I got ahold of an escort gt rear caliper. I hope its the same thing. Ill replace it today. My old pads.. the outer pad was new.. inner pad was gone. I think somehow thats sticking? any ideas? I am a brake idiot..

i think escorts share the same rear calipers as protege lx's which are indeed not the same as mx3 rear calipers. its definately your caliper since the pad on the other side was no where as worn as the passenger side pads

Yeah.. we placed some thinner brake bads and same result it over heats. Tomorrow Im picking up another caliper from ascrap yard for 20 dllrs. This sucks because it has been doing this for the longest time and just recently got bad... this was killing my times at the track.

You have to replace both rear wheel pads or both front pads at same time. Don't mix and match pads

ok that was it, got a junk yard caliper.. looked like new. Wheels were on the car. Replaced.. only had to bleed it a bit and walla.. this one doesnt stick. test drive it a few miles and good to go. Brakes were actually cold since i wasnt really using them (hwy)

I wonder how much a seized caliper or stickinb brake can really affect track times?
