Shock & Spring suggestion

Post by kmvmx3 »

I'm ready to replace all four of my shocks & springs so I need some suggestions. How do I know the strut bearing needs replacing???

1. I don't want to have to modify to make it fit.

2. It must be readily available

3. Drop is not as important as ride quality

4. Not too pricy ( perhaps 400-500 total at most)

Thanks.

hmm well if u go for stock (struts and boots) it runs you 160 dllrs at tirerack.com for the pair. check their whole site. They got even the mounts for only 45 dllrs NEW. tirerack.com they got koni inserts i believe. the RS suspensionm FITS GS.. the difference? a stupid ABS bracket..

well good luck gettin that cheap... if u go stock struts ur just gonna blow them with any amount of drop....

the cheapest i found and i know all of ur are going to say wow what a rip.. ahha as usual

i dealt within canada to avoid problems with stupid border costs and whatever... kyb struts are going to be ur cheapest as far as i know and i was getitn them around 85 bucks each.. boots were 20 bucks each.. springs well i'm sure u can find a set for 250 somewhere.. i paid 360 for my eibachs had to wait a damn long time for them though... ride quality is pretty spiffy i'd say

intrax claim to have stock ride quality and are more for looks

I would look into the Ford Escort ZX2 S/R strut & spring combo or combine the struts with some Eibach or H&R springs or Ground Control coilovers.

Tons of info out there abuot the ZX2 stuff... check it out.

yup, do it.

Oh, and dremeling out the mounts doesn't count as customization. If you can't dremmel out a mount, you shoudl be modding your car lol...

dremel FTW!!!1

ZX2's with sprint springs. IMO though H&R's or the eibachs are better b/c they are slightly higher and stiffer than the sprints.

since ride quality is important to you, from what i observed most people say that eibachs, b&g's and intrax have much better ride quality than h&r, ground control and sprint springs.

u can find tokico hp or kyb gr2 for about 130-180 shipped on ebay.

tokico hp = illumina at about 2-3
kyb gr2 = agx at about 2
koni red = lower 1/3 of a koni sport valving according to advertisements i have seen
tokico zx2 s/r = make your own guess.

the link below is for a civic but u can get an idea of the way different brands tune their dampers. if you can read damper dynos, this will give you an idea of how low, mid and high speed handling will be while somewhat gauging ride quality based on valving.

http://www.koni-na.com/presentations/civic/slide2.html

i have always koni reds were a bit overrated and over priced and this confirmed it for me. the stiffest setting on the koni red is not far from the gr2, hp and probably the zx2 also. if i had 4 softer settings than the gr2, hp or zx2 i wouldnt even consider using those useless settings cuz i may as well use my stock struts.

bilsteins are way overrated, the reason they ride well is not because they are tuned so well, it is because they are valved so conservatively in both compression and rebound that it may be underdampened giving the impression of a good quality ride. ots koni yellows on the other hand are also overrated but are still very good just not as good as many people claim when it comes down to real damper dyno but still better than any thing readily available for the mx3.
