Coming Soon! MX-3 Weight Reduction Guide (make requests)

Post by Gro Harlem »

I just finished making one for the 2nd gen protege I recently bought and already partially gutted:

http://www.clubprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17577

I have been planning to do one for the MX-3 for awhile now.

I'm not sure if i'm going to go in as much detail as that guide but I might.

IF anyone has any requests or would like to contribute post here! I am not willing to remove my a/c but if someone here has the lines/compressor and crap lying around to weigh please do & help a brutha out!

I wish I had my manual steering rack, I could weigh it against the power one & the pump to see how much that would save

I'll try to get this crap soon enough but it might take me awhile. I'm in the process of sanding my cars paint (finally) and it'll take me a couple more days to buff/polish all the scratches from sanding to a shine.

Could you tell me how much the stock rear quarter panel weighs? I think I am going to cut mine off to save some weight.

Thanks.

(PS- The headlights too.. both with and without the bulb)

(PSS-- Could you weigh a stock headlight bulb and an aftermarket one to see if there is any performance gain out of the aftermarket ones?)

Okay sorry.

How about the tail lights? Stock vs Altezza?

Okay I will stop, I swear.

Why the hell is everyone so damned sensitive these days?

Calm down Will- My post was CLEARLY a joke. I figured you of all people would see that.

As always, I love your How To's and your FAQ posts- and I am sure I would like this one as well.

So chill the hell out and get to weighing stuff already!

 HAHAHAHA Hoodzy's Revenge for the EGP. Good Job Mate! I wonder what the weight reduction would be for removing the EGP??? Hmm...LOL ROTFLMAO

Alright, now seriously. I appreciate all the effort that GRO goes through to make how-to's. I have refered people to his seatbelt beep how-to and Headlight cleaning how-to more times than I can count. No worries Gro, Perry was just having fun.

I think I posted my choices before in the other thread you had.

-stock rims w/o rubber
-complete 92-93 seat with rails and brackets
-stock hood
-upper rad bracket support
-rear seatbelt assembly with belt. clicky button and mounting bolts brackets
-stock floormat
-stock carpet, whole
-rear seats, seat and backrest

I remember reading somwhere that Lexus used lighter or shorter bolts in their assembly of LS or SC, can't remember, and saved 100lbs. Now if I can only find a big chunk of titanium somewhere.....

I remember there was a site a while ago showing how to take off 400lbs.
Anyone got the link?

-stock rims w/o rubber

already weighed w/rubber, if you get the weight of a falken zeix in the size i had you could get a pretty close estimate to what the 15x6's weigh. I'm not willing to unmount a tire to get the weight of the wheel.

-complete 92-93 seat with rails and brackets

I'll definitely get this for sure

-stock hood

too much work + my car has 2 additional coats of paint on top of the stock paint (although sanded pretty well before painting) so my weight will be pretty different. + i dont' feel like removing the undershrouding...those clips are hard to remove w/out breaking

-upper rad bracket support
i can get that no problem

-rear seatbelt assembly with belt. clicky button and mounting bolts
brackets
ya planned to

-stock floormat
don't have one to weigh...only got generic floormats
-stock carpet, whole
i might, might not. depends on how far i disassemble my car. On my protege, it only weighed 5.89lbs and i'm sure the MX3 is damn near identical. I was prett ysurprised at how little it weighed. IMO not worth removing

-rear seats, seat and backrest
cushion for sure, mat under cushion for sure, but the seatback i might not. I sold the spare I had & its a PAIN to remove my amp & the carpeting from the back of it, don't know if i am willing.

not the SC i can tell you that much...that car weighs like 3800!

Luc St. Pier had a weight reduction write-up linked to his GSR page. That's probably what you're remembering. He started by looking for 100 Lbs. wt. reduction, then went on to remove over 250 Lbs. End of '04 Luc cleaned up his MX-3 GSR site and appears to have removed the weight reduction link. http://cafe.rapidus.net/stpierlu/mygsr.htm Look at the bottom of the mods list, last item under "Misc." and you'll see "Weight reduction program / Carbon Fiber diet." Doesn't appear to be linked to the weight reduction write-up any longer. I have an archive copy of Luc's previous write-up around somewhere... will look for it later.

Closer to 300 lbs. This link should take you to the latest (Jan '04) archived copy of Luc St. Pierre's old GSR site re his "MX-3 Diet" http://web.archive.org/web/200406022140 ... weight.htm
