Transmission Problem

Post by UKMX-3 »

Hi.

I've searched the board for this a few times and havent gotten a definative answer yet....so im just going to ask.

My gear box is acting weird, and im not sure whether its time for a new clutch or gear box.

When changing up ie. 1st to 2nd to 3rd etc.... its goes fine, no problems at all feels nice and slick, however, going down is a different story.

5th to 4th to 3rd is fine, however, 3rd to 2nd is difficult, always seems to crunch the cogs, and 2nd to 1st is really hard need to be going very slowly indeed to change down.....

I'm quite an enthusiastic driver and I like to blip my throttle on the way down, but i thought that might be causing the problem so I have started doing things conventionally...and it still happens.

I know Im due a clutch change but im wondering if thats what the problem is or if it could be the gearbox itself thats messed up.

Additionally, does anyone know if a gearbox from a 4cyl 2litre probe will fit the Mx-3, I know the v6 does, but as this is a different engine i didnt think it would be the same transmission? Comments? Advice?

HELP!

Actually I would think that would be a good thing...your bringing up the revs to match where the engine will be after you shift down, essentially you should in that case be helping the syncros out, giving them less work to do.

I have the ATX trans in my MX-3.. so I cant say I know if thats normal for the MX-3 trans or not.. I do know that my Subaru XT 5 speed does the same thing.. The speed of the car has to be low enough before the trans will allow me to down shift.. I always assumed it was a safety precaution to prevent over revving the engine.

When you clutch is on the way out, ie not quite disingaing,
changing down can be a pain in the butt, 2-1 is normally
the hard ones..
