My turbo V6 almost done, pics

Post by rebel2k4 »

I've been working on it for 2 weeks now...

:)

I have some more pictures of the x-member modification I'll post when I get a chance. Other than that I plan to keep the stock battery location and all I had to move was the coolant overflow tank. I might look into moving the coolant filler on the radiator as it sits a little closer to the turbo than I'd like. I still need to make an oil feed, oil return, and charge pipe.

Congratulations Man!!
It´s always exciting to see turbocharged projects start! Your piping looks real good! I would advise you a pair of things although:

After all the effort done to build the piping and the Kl swap, How are you going to run without an intercooler man? If I were you I would invest some more time and install a permanent unit, and use the water injection as an auxiliary unit, and you will have a good efficiency intercooler system! I´m sure that you will be rising the boost after a week! so you will be more on the safer side! I will suggest you if you don´t want to build a front mount one (which is a hassle) to build a side mounted one below your headlight, just like I did to my K8 or like audi's and other cars do. If you want better efficiency install a water cooled one, which can be installed anywhere you want. Now I´m installing a Toyota Celica 4wd unit that I bought for 150$! it looks really good, and sure it will work!

The other thing is your Fmu ratio. 12:1 is a radical setup! It´s forcing the fuel system and hoses a lot! If you could source a set of millenia injectors and an Afpr in conjunction with your Fmu, you won´t need to push right behind the limit! I suppose you want your car to run for some time!

Congratulations again man, and Keep us updated!!!

Thanks battosai. I had almost all the mandrel pipes laying around so I just decided to make a turbo kit. The angles and stuff look okay it's just different colors and looks kinda crappy because the pipes aren't new.

I also already had the fuel pump, turbo, and FMU left over from my mx6. The 12:1 is pretty typical of what custom turbo probe and mx6's use. I'm going to throw a fuel pressure gauge on it and make sure I'm not going over 85 psi, which is where the injectors go static.

As far as the intercooler, yeah if I'm going to do it I want a nice front mount. I might look into that but for now I just wanted to run low boost and when I get bored with it, install an FMIC. It's going to be tough to run pipes for it.

Hey your pipes look pretty nice....I have to say yours are better than mine. Did you go with 1.75 inch pipes to a 2.5 to the turbo or what because it looks pretty big and make sure you let me see how you modify the crossmember. I want mine to be 2.5 or 2.25 but I don't know how to modify it. My old motor KF locked up on me so I just got done with my kl-de swap. I used my old turbo pipes on it but it stalls when you step on the pedel all the way down. I Think my pipes where the come together is too small and not enough air can get through. I was planning on either selling the kit or redoing the pipes. So let me know how you are doing with the project.

nice work rebel2k4..I will turbo mine soon too..Do you have a link for your cardomain site..I would like to take a closer look (pics are small)..does the turbo has an internal wastegate or external?..what size of piping did you use...I've seen many times 2" piping for collectors merging into 2.25" to turbine then 2.5" to muffler. again nice work :2thumbsup:

Everything is looking good man. Get that thing going and let us know. And I agree about the front mount, plus they look awesome, how can you pass it up? But yeah I think you would be better off with a front mount and then have the water cooler as aux.

In the pic with the turbo in the car, is that the permanent location? It appears as if you have one of the tubes pointing right at the side of the car.

Sorry about the pics size. I'll enlarge them some.
But no I don't have a cardomain site for this car, I just use my account to store pictures.

This is just a test kit, to run low boost and see how it pulls. Eventually I will add a nice front mount.
Right now I cant fit the internal wastegate actuator between the turbo and headlight, so I have to find a smaller one. I'm hoping I can rig up one off a subaru IHI turbo. Other than that it should run.

Yes that picture is the permanent location. I probably have to make a new pipe from the turbo intake to the fenderwell, as I dont think that an HKS butterfly air filter will fit in that tight space like I was hoping. I'm going to try first though. I'll keep you guys updated.

Another thing.... there's almost no room to fit a front mount behind the stock bumper. It's going to take some work to figure out how I even want to do that.

Okay more pics, I have it running now. RUnning 3-4 psi and its damn quick. I'm going to put it on a wideband soon, add in a flex section, a BOV, and some other mods. Remember, this is version 1 of my kit! MUCH MORE to come!

Modded x-member, used some plate 1/4" mild steel that I bent and then used some angle iron for support on the front section.
:) Also a shot of the modification I did to to wastegate actuator. The garrett versions are much larger and will not fit between the turbo and the headlight, no way no how. SO i stopped by the junkyard and picked this one up off a late 80's IHI turbo subaru wagon.
<img src="http://images.cardomain.com/member_imag ... 6_full.jpg" alt=" - " />

As you can see in the above pic I also had to relocate the coolant filler. if anyone wants any close up pics of that or anything else let me know...

i'm quite suprised to see you didn't move your battery! did you leave it for a reason or did you just try to work around it? it just seems to me that it would be a really easy way to free up that space :D

It was just more time and work to relocate the battery, plus theres a lot more regulations when you get teched at the track to race.

Oh yeah, pipe specs are as follows:

Primaries: 1.75" OD
Merge point: 2.5" expanded to 3", then crushed in a vise and formed with a hammer to get a nice oval.
Up pipe to turbo: 2.5"
Downpipe: 2.5"

Charge pipe: 2" OD expanded to 2 1/4" at VAF.

All bends are mandrel, no real pie-cuts.

Heres the coolant overflow location now...
<img src="http://images.cardomain.com/member_imag ... 7_full.jpg" alt=" - " />

The oil feed I used a 3/8" NPT brass fitting where the hex plug used to be on the block. it's on the rear side of the block next to the tranny, on the front side of the motor.

Once again the car is parked while I add a flex section, install my 190LPH fuel pump, coat and wrap the pipes, and install a BOV.

When you can afford it, you may want to invest in one of these little buggers.
IC

Either have the inlet and/or outlet tubes modified, or find one that will be a drop in fit altogether. Put a scoop right where the IC would be, cut a hole out, and you've got yourself a pretty efficient intercooler.
