question about the BP

Post by Noobi »

I found an engine from a 91 Escort GT, which unless I'm mistaken is the BP non-turbo engine. The cost of this engine is $450 and it has 90k miles on it. I'm wondering if this is a good deal and if it is a pretty straightforward swap into a 94 RS. Also, I'd like to know which of the 4 cyl swaps are the most straightforward. I've done searches, but I haven't really found a definitive answer for this question.

Thanks a bunch.

Well I am putting in a bpt which is pretty similar to that engine and if it is anything the same you are going to need a protege transmission and cv axels, probally a clutch, and I dont know how the wiring harness will work but you may need to splice it in or something. Or just replace the harness alltogethor and use the protege ecu. I have no idea how the wiring will work but you will definately need a gearbox, clutch, cv axels and probally engine mounts. It does sound like it could be a good deal though. Don't let what you need to get discourage you from doing it. I find if you really want to do something then just get it done! I heard from everyone that to get a bpt it was going to be alot of work and alot of messing around. When I read that it discouraged me from doing it, One day I just went and bought a bpt off ebay and basically I am forcing myself to do it. I am at the point now where I have so much into it that it is going to get done weither I want it to or not. :froggie_red:

So.. DO IT MAN! or you can hold of and get a bpt or just turbo the ecsort engine later.

My main concerns lie in being able to actually find all the parts I would need, finding a shop that would be able to put it together (I'm about 2.5 hrs from the nearest metropolitan area, which is either Orlando or Tampa, and about 3 hrs from Miami), and then what all this would cost and if would be worth doing.

There will be no problem with finding parts for the swap.. you can get a gearbox from the local scrap yard out of a 91-95 protege and then you might need engine mounts that you might be able to get from the scrap yard also, but usually they just cut them right off so direct from mazda would have to be the way. Then your cv axels you can also get at the scrap yard.. probally off the car that the gearbox came out of. It actually wont be that bad.. You might have to chuck a couple of hundred for the gearbox and cv axels but that is what it takes.
If youre wondering if it is worth it I would have to say yes. Just because it IS a better engine and it would easily take a turbo in the future. You should check out Marlons MX-3 , he has a bp in his. I bet you that he is quite pleased with that engine.
