why is everyone so scared?

Post by fredleysir »

why is everyone so scared to run boost on the K series engines? maybe i'm just used to the Z, but kids over there run 500+ whp on stock rods. granted, that is a factory turbocharged 300hp engine, but it seems like no one even wants to try it with a ZE. just build her up and tune her. of course it's going to cost money, but if you're dropping in the ZE, why not rebuild her twice as strong first while the engines out? i'm not comin here to hate or disrespect, it just seems like no one wants to risk anything.

Having gone through 4 motors in my mx6, I dont trust stock parts as far as I can throw them. Granted it was partially due to lean tuning a couple times... oh yeah and that 175 shot haha

On my KL, I plan to run 10 psi max, i need it to be reliable. I'm just collecting parts right now.

If you're referring to z31's, my friend just did a turbo swap on his. It's awesome. full rebuilt w/ TT pistons and rods. those 3.0's are strong as all hell.

I always asked my self about it....

I'know the tranny is the weakest part, and you need to upgrade the oil and fuel lines (pumps, etc)...

But it would be nice to see some MX-3 V6 running 400whp...and you don't need to run "super-hiper-high" boost levels (probably 16-20psi)....

And the most important: I LOVE THE V6 SOUND!!! :froggie_red: (...ok..I already heard Mr. Jeff Abrams turbo KL-DE....sweeeeeeeeet!).

only time you really start hammering the tranny is when your 275whp+, lower then that your fine unless your drag racing at every light.

i was referring to Z32s actually
but what i was getting at is there are few people even running over 200rwhp
the canadian (dave lauzier i think?) had what 350 whp and was running low 11s with the BPT right?
imagine a 450 whp mx-3...
why does everyone say the ZE can only handle 5-6psi? yeah it has 10:1 compression, but that just means it'll yield better power gains from the turbo set up and require finer tuning which isn't too difficult these days.
after seeing these supra and 300zx TTs running 800rwhp, it just seems like 450 whp from the ZE wouldn't be too far fetched.
i'm not saying i could go out and build a 450 hp mx-3, i just think these cars have more potential than they're given credit for

The pickle's point is a big reason why noone has done it yet. Has anyone ever figured out and posted what all would be needed to make the KL-ZE able to withstand 15+ psi? I would really be interested in finding out how much that would cost because seriously, while my engine's waiting to be dropped in, I want to do as much to it as I can afford right away.

Yea, like their daily transportation and the $1500-$2500 to rebuild or replace their detonated-to-hell remnants of what used to be an engine....

Take out the money factor and I would think most people here would be willing to 'risk' any power-increasing mod you throw at them. :)

i remember readon on probetalk about a groopbuy for aftermarket heads, 3 types for the KL, a low 8.5:1 compression and a higher compreesion (i think 11:1, but it may be higher) Im not sure if their for the DE and the ZE, and i dont remember the 3rd type, but theres some, but scarse

you mean pistons and rods. You can make a kl motor go to 400hp easy there is acouple at 300hp out there the problem is how do you plant that that to the ground in a front wheel drive car. At 300hp+ you run into tranny and axle problem and after you figure away out to hand that you have figure away out to keep it to the ground and then you will have do something about gearing because you whould have to shiff so fast it would be unbeleavable. plus all that power in a mx3 is just crazy unless your setting it up just for the track 250hp enough to keep most people happy, most here are happy with 175 hp from the klze. All my numbers are whp for people just jumping on the numbers

My car makes 447.8 WHP with 2 turbos at 20 PSI of boost.

there, now what does that do for you, are you happy now?

does it make the world a better place?

what does it have to do with the price of tea in china?

here is a link to a 800 HP mazda 2.5l

so what?

no one is scared, we just have common sense.

you obviously dont know much about engines or you wouldnt be asking these lame questions.

ok, that's what i'm talkin about, i simply wasn't aware of anyone. no need to get all pissed off man. i'll be the first to admit i don't know anything about the K series (as i previously stated) that's why i'm here. sorry to ask a question, i thought this was america.

are you running stock pistons and rods? what turbos are you running and is that a custom kit?

but again, that 800hp 2.5 is basically a full race built machine...
i'm tryin to find out what kind of options are available, from stock to a totally built bottom end... i personally don't plan on building up the bottom end due to a lack of funds, but i'd definitely swain coat the rods and bearings because
1. it's inexpensive
2. it's definitely strong
3. in case i decide to add nitrous or turbo/sc applications

anyways, i totally forgot the mx was fwd... i guess the whole drivetrain figure and lack of aftermarket support definitely plays a role in putting that kind of power down.
but like i said, i'm not trying to run 10 second quarter miles or anything, i don't particularly care for the quarter anyway... i just would like enough power to satisfy my hunger. i don't even have the mx yet ( i had one a couple years ago though )... just wanted some ideas on power availability and such before i dove head first into it. thanks.

Well, Curtklze, not all of us are BMW techs. So that means that we have questions that perhaps you can answer. I too am curious why not too many people have high hp mx-3s. You don't have to be an *** about it. Now go run along and play with your BMW buddies. *pat pat*

just swap in the KLZE or KLDE.. and turbo it with low boost. you can get an easy 250hp or more man.. and anything higher you would have to start customizing, ie tranny and internal components. curt is pissed because there is really no reason to have more than 250hp in an mx3 (ESPECIALLY if you aren't into drag racing) ;) ;)
