STRIP IT

Post by 93mxrgs »

Hey guys whats up, im RELITIVLY new to the import sceen, but i recently stripped the back seats n spare tire n jack (for city driving) out n it made a HUGE impact on how i launch, i usually am neck n neck with a v-tec similarly modded (intake exhaust) but i whipped ones a-- all over the strip last night, might as well go for it guys unless u have midgets in ur family n one can sit back there anyway, just my 2 cents LATER Image

Weight reduction definately helps out the power:weight ratio. I've been pondering cutting some of the nonessential door supports out. Some of the things I've heard of removed on these cars:
-spare tire
-jack
-door panels
-rear seat
-passenger's seat
-tar under the car
-brake heat shields
-interior plastic panels in rear
-dash
-center console

I probably forgot some, but that's a good place to start. If you can't forsee a good use for it, yank it!
Image Image
------------------
David Coleman
1993 Mazda MX-3 GS Special Edition
V6 engine info | KL FAQ | ECU reprogramming | K series Image cache | Probetalk Archive Search
Support OPEC: Buy an SUV

OHH thanks for the tip on that clutch, do u know how much it costs >?? or where i can get a price list for it, and also im not quite at the level i can be changen them so how much would a shop charge to do it, (rough estimate) your expertise is greatly appreacite here, thanks man

3349 is the MOST the car can weigh, fully loaded with 4 passengers and 50litres of fuel. I believe the stock figure for a MTX GS is 2580 or so.
------------------
David Coleman
1993 Mazda MX-3 GS Special Edition
V6 engine info | KL FAQ | ECU reprogramming | K series Image cache | Probetalk Archive Search
Support OPEC: Buy an SUV

The absolute best way to strip weight
is through light weight parts
ie: exhaust ... normally weights alot.... out
of japan the ARC titanium exhaust weight a
1/3rd of a normal one and runs at 3inches all
the way through.
ie: lighter flywheel, its only a few lbs but it helps in every aspect
ie: lighter rims/mags, race / rally mags weight only about 4-5kg per tire, where as a stock rim will weight closer to 7-9kg per tire. Adds up
ie: removing plastic from the trunk of the car adds up to about 7-10lbs of plastic.
ie: replacing the rear window with perspex/plastic window.... 1 it wont break, 2 you save yourself about 50lbs
ie: Removing firewall material on hood and other places, i have spoken to alot of ppl about this, most dont recommend it, but reports vary from about 20lbs of material - say 80lbs of material from the whole car.
ie: aircon setup, 30lbs
ie: rear wiper motor and bottle, 15lbs
ie: aftermarket brake rotors, can weight about upto 4lbs less per corner(depends on material used)
ie: ive seen light weight radiators built from titanium alloy and carbon fibre... they will reduce your weight by about 25lbs
ie: carbon fibre hoods reduction is at least another 25lbs
ie: carbon fibre doors... normally are illegal unless you have roll cage and full race setup... ive seen one show car here that had them and he drove it around all the time had it done so youcouldnt tell the door was that light until he shut it and the thing rattled like hell. I dont know the weight saving on that but would be alot
ie: all seats in the car, depending weather you have a leather interior or cloth. you can go get yourself a 5lb recaro race seat for urself and passenger. cant really complain about that.
ie: car stereo equip ... always weight alot
there are more but ill stop

Thanks David and Davidosk, you guys just beat me, again. I was going to give some huge, several paragraph long, explanation about how to gut the car and where to start.
How about this though, anyone ever cut out the spare tire space? I plan on doing it and welding a 3/8" piece of aluminum as a patch. Anyone have an idea how much that big piece of metal will weigh? I'm guessing another 25lbs.

Ask him to weigh the material he removes and then guestimate for the rest. I think 25LBS is pushing it. I'd guess at most 10LBS.

I was thinking that it should be about the same weight, but people were saying different...
I was actually betting money that there is no weight difference, can someone prove me wrong or right?
