intake side box????

Maybe a stupid question, but what purpose does the box on the lower right of the air filter box serve? I have a 92 mx-3 4 cylinder, on the right side of the of the air filter box there is a hose that leads into a plastic box that is mounted under the right headlight. What is its purpose? Also the port that is under the bumper on the right that leads up into the battery plateform, why is there a port to bring air into the battery?<BR>
