Athlon xp2600 @ 333fsb VS. Athlon xp2600 @ 266fsb

Post by quicksliver »

Question. Will a Athlon XP2600 @ 333fsb work in a Asus A7A266 motherboard? I know it won't run at 333fsb since the motherboard only supports 266...but will it just like clock down to 266fsb?

it will, but it will run slower since the bus speed is lower, you will have to change the multiplier higher to make it run at its stock speed, but most chips are locked and you cant change the mult

the 333 chip runs at 12.5 x 166 (333 DDR) thats 2075 MHz, so it would be running at 12.5 x 133 (266 DDR) and thats 1662 MHz or around XP 1900+ speeds

also, if you plan on upgrading your motherboard to support your new chip and you go with an nForce2 based board, that there's a compatibility issue where you need to run DDR400 when using nn nForce2 and a Barton-Core-Based Athlon, unless you have high-speed DDR333, like Crucial, than tha works. And you can only use 2 sticks of DDR400, even if it has 3 slots for it.

However, if your getting a VIA-based board, these problems do not exist

Well i've got an Asus A7A266 motherboard at the moment with a 1.4GHz Athlon chip in it. Went to asus and found out that the board (with up to date bios) will support up to XP2600 @ 266fsb. But when i went to pick one up, i found out the 266fsb version was discontinued and replaced by the 333fsb version. I guess i'll just have to get one off eBay or something. Thanks guys.
