(Feb. 18) - A teenager from Mexico who mistakenly received organs from a donor with a different blood type was not expected to live more than a few days, a family friend said Tuesday.<p>The girl, whose family moved to the United States so she could get a heart and lung transplant, remained in critical condition Tuesday, said Richard Puff, a spokesman for Duke University Hospital.<p>``She's only got a couple of more days to live on this heart-lung machine, and she's already experiencing damage to her kidneys,'' friend Mack Mahoney told ABC's ``Good Morning America.''<p>Jesica Santillam, 17, suffers from a heart deformity that prevents her lungs from pumping enough oxygen into her blood. After a three-year wait, she received a transplant on Feb. 7 with a heart and lungs flown in from Boston.<p>The organs flown from Boston to Durham 10 days ago were sent with paperwork correctly listing the donor's blood type, said Sean Fitzpatrick of the New England Organ Bank, which sent the organs.<p>Speaking through an interpreter, the girl's mother, Magdalena Santillan, told ``Good Morning America'' that the hospital called her and said they had received same blood-type organs, and that the organs had come exactly just to her daughter's measurements.<p>Somehow, the type-A organs were transplanted into the girl with type O-positive blood.<p>``This was a tragic error, and we accept responsibility for our part,'' said Dr. William Fulkerson, chief executive officer of Duke University Hospital, in a statement released Monday night. ``This is an especially sad situation since we intended this operation to save the life of a girl whose prognosis was grave.''<p>Duke Hospital officials initially refused to elaborate on the mix-up, but Mahoney, who has legal authority to participate in Jesica's medical care, said the girl's family was told a ``clerical error'' allowed her name to come up on a list of possible recipients.<p>02/18/03 09:51 EST<p>That poor girls, my heart goes out to her. A family has donated to her what she needed and she had a second operation this morning that took 4 hours. She is expected to live, but can you imagine the lawsuit her family can do now. Gonna be instant millionares.

Well man you gotta remember...a transplant such as a heart or lung is very serious. I understand how you can be upset that she received the wrong blood type organ, but dang a transplant like that is a toss up..if you makes it then wonderful thats excellent, but if you dont...then well, at least they tried....you had more of a chance than if you didnt get the transplant at all...

no i just cant believe someone made a mistake like that u know, woudlnt atleast 2 ppl check it before it was put in. ok i understand putting the wrong stuff on a humbuger, but when it coems to a heart or lungs wouldnt they be a bit more carefull

I find something kinda strange about this story. The whole family were illegal immagrants from Mexico, and now they want to sue the doctors. They should have come over legally, because they might have some more credibility. Just my opinion.

I agree with Mike, its not fair to US citizens for someone to come over here illegally and then sue doctors and (most likely) get millions of dollars. Not to be cold hearted, but its just not right.

I believe that US citizens should have the right to sue the doctor's and hospital, but Illegal immigrants shouldn't have the right to sue. They don't pay taxes, so they shouldn't get treated as citizens.

Do you have any Idea how many people die each day?<p>If they didnt give her the transplant she probably would have died any way.<p>what make this story so important that it has to be posted on a site about MX-3s.<p>what about the homless people in any major city that die of exposure every year or all the kids that go hungry evry day.<p>what about the peoply that get blown up by suicide bombers or all the children that die in wars that are happening right now, and all the inocent people that are tourtured and killed because of what they belive in.<p>people have died getting liposuction or face lifts, **** happens and people make mistakes.<p>I come to this site to get away from all the crap that this world has to offer, and dont need to be reminded how lucky I am to live in Canada.<p>If I want to see stuff like this I can turn on the local news, or pick up a news paper(which I do every night) but when I come here I want to have fun.<p>call me cold harted if you want, I dont care, but befor you post about one person that died, at least try to come up with a reason why that persons story is more important than all the 10s of thousands of other people that die every day.<p>After all you didnt post anything about them.

I don't mean to sound cold, but:<p>-They are illegal immigrants and they want to sue doctors even though they arent legal and have no credibility...
-Doctors moved this girl to the top of the list over tens of thousands of other people who need organs, she was put on top to rush the organs to her.
-Sh!t happens! I know they made a very grave mistake but they tried and they meant well, and so many other people are dying in the world too...<p>Aww hell let's just talk about MX-3s!!!

wow...you people are cold. its very upsetting to hear someone say just because she was an illegal she doesnt desrve he same treatment as someone who is "legeal". if you had a significant other die under the knife you would demand something too. and for you to say well they are illegal and died so blaa. someone still died due to the ignorance of some docotor somewhere and you want us just to let them go. hell no! and yes she was moved up to the top of all donations list, because they gave her the wrong organs. pretty much telling her she was going to die, which she did. and yes people are getting blown upand dying all over the world, but we arent talking about the world. we are talking about this poor little girl and her family. the way some of you are talking makes you sound communist. only people in our country get treatment and all others can suckon a egg.....
