computer case cooling fans

Post by Steeb »

i bought 3 80 to 92mm fan adapters for my computer case and my new heatsink to convert to 92mm fans to try to quiet it down. right now i have a vantec 7200 rpm 60mm fan on my old heatsink that runs at 45db (thats what it says on the packaging). i was wondering if a 92mm fan running at 2500rpms at 40 db will make much difference in the high pitch whining being its only 5 db of difference. the noise isnt so much the problem anymore, its more the high pitch 60mm fan spinning at 7500rpm. what kind of sound does a 92mm fan make at a few db less?

bigger has more of a lowerer frequency level.. but you can get a fan controller for your case to slowit down, or drop it to 5V, but you may fry your CPU if you do that . You'll get less airflow, thus raising the temp. Loot at the airflow rating(CFM). thats what matters. a 92 to an 80Mm adapter on a heatsink doesnt improve moch as far as cooling goes. Its like blowing air in a funnel. Its all about airflow, surface area and heat dissipation. If you dont have case fans.. gettem. If your wanting to lower your CPU temp, your going to have to have good air flow. Remember heat rises. So have your lower fan drawing air from the front of the case into it, and have the upper case fan near the CPU blowing out. Tie cables up, lets ome air flow. Does your Motherboard support temp monitoring?

i have a msi k7 turbo 2 and yes it does support cpu temp monitoring which isnt accurate but good enuf for me. i do have an 80mm fan for intake and exhaust for case cooling and i am getting 3 92mm vantec tornados to run at 7v. im hoping to be moving at least 50-60cfm with a 92mm intake and exhaust fan aswell as for my new thermalright ax7. my amd duron 1.3ghz with slight oc temps hit only 40c max under load with a oem heatsink and a 40cfm 60mm fan so with the ax7 and a tornado running at 7v i think i should be good. im totally sick of the tiny 60mm fan whine at 7000rpm+. if its just as loud i wouldnt mind just as long as theres no whine!!! thanx tho barry i remember checkin out your site a while back. are you as much a comp geek as a car geek?

if its what u do for a living than i must be the only comp geek on this board. i know this is kind of off topic but its still computer stuff. i been getting random restarts lately. according to pc alert III (is this is an accurate prog to use?) my vcore, 12v, 5v and 3.3v all seem to be pretty stable. oh yah my screen goes black somethimes but i know the comp isnt frozen cuz the caps lock and num lock still turn on and off and my dsl modem still blinks. anyideas what it could be?
[ January 11, 2003: Message edited by: Steeb ]
