well the lock in the hatch can be popped out fairly easily, once out you can reach in and turn the release, not quite so easy but doable. i had to swap locks out on my 93 emerald this way.

Yeah, I realised this afterwards. Its just a catch that can be flicked with a finger. Had metal plate welded over mine then covered it with a Mazda badge (cheaper than getting it shaved and resprayed on a red car, looks just as good IMO )
