Speeding, Please read!
2 Hempstead Men Killed in Separate Accidents
By Sumathi Reddy

Staff Writer
August 24, 2002

Two Hempstead men were struck and killed in separate car Friday night,
Nassau police said yesterday.
Egbert Tonge, 34, was driving a 1990 Plymouth hatchback northbound on
Peninsula Boulevard in Lakeview at 11:45 p.m. when he apparently lost
control of his car, striking the median and flipping onto the guardrail,
police said.
Tonge, of East Graham Avenueour was ejected into southbound traffic and
struck by a Chevrolet Chevette driven by Miguel Menano, 46, of Far
Rockaway, police said. Tonge was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said
preliminary reports indicate Tonge's speed may have been a factor in the
accident.
At the exact same time, Alan R. Green, 57, was crossing Northern Boulevard
at Middleneck Road in Flower Hill when he was struck by a 1992 Toyota
Solara driven by Frank Fisher, 60, of Centerport, police said.
Green, of Cathedral Avenue, was transported to North Shore University
Hospital in Manhasset and pronounced dead at 2:15 a.m., police said.
No charges were filed in either accident, police said.
Friends and relatives in Hempstead yesterday mourned the loss of two of
their own.
Tonge, who was born in the West Indies and moved to Hempstead with his
family as a teenager, was remembered as the loving, proud father of a
2-year-old girl and an avid car racer.
A mechanic who worked with his father, Tonge liked to work on foreign cars
and compete in races in New Jersey, said his sister, Irma Tonge.
"He was very close to his family," Irma Tonge said. "I'm getting married in
four weeks. He was supposed to be one of my best men.
"He was a good brother, a friendly person. When I needed something done, he
did it. He didn't hesitate. He'll be missed a lot," she said.
Greencan, who lived alone, was a freelance commercial artist who loved to
travel and wine and dine in foreign countries, said Bonnie Brockett, his
longtime friend and former fiancee.
The two were all set to go to Aruba soon, Brockett said.
"I just spoke to him [Friday]," she said. "We were considering going to
Newport next weekend ... I can't even put into words how devastated I am."
That was my cousin, which as you can read died this weeked. He was an avavid and accopmlished racer, on and off the track. He wasn't racing during the accident, just speeding. I want you guys to remember even if you are or not racing, just remeber safety. All it takes is one time, like my cousin found out harshly.Saftey first man, thats all i can say. Safety!!!

Who would ever think just going a few MPH would cause such a thing. Makes me want to slow it down... Sorry for the loss
