BP motor swap in SOHC MX-3 Update

Post by jap-spec »

A couple of months ago I swaped a Protege 1.8L DOHC engine in my MX3. So far everthing is running good. I'm still using my stock transmission, alxes, engine harness, and ECU, Which are my main reason for writing this post. Now don't get me wrong, these stock parts are still doing their jobs, but these little things are annoy me.

1. This is my biggest concern: I am still using my stock ECU and fuel pump with the 1.8L DOHC engine. I can't help but feel I'm loosing horsepower and running lean with the stock set-up. I am planning to turbo this engine in the future so I need to purchase these items anyways; a RX7 twin turbo fuel pump an a FMU fuel regulator.<I am not trying to turn this post into a turbo topic!> Basically my question is can I run the RX7 twin turbo fuel pump and fMU fuel regulator to feed my engine more fuel or is it going to make my car run too rich? Otherwise, Should I just keep my stock fuel pump and buy a Apexi' AFC controller to increase the fuel? < Please don't tell me to get the Protege wiring harness and ECU, I have both the 1.6L SOHC and the 1.8L DOHC wiring diagrams and they are the same, except for the two extra wires on the DOHC harness. For the Protege ECU, that also is no good beause it will set off checl engine light because I don't hae the VICS system hooked up!>

2.The Sohc right side stock axle has some play in it. I don't know if i damage it when doing the swap or just didn't torque down the axle nut tight enough. Can anyone tell me what could be the reasin for the play? I will soon purchase the Protege LX intermediate shaft and right side axle soon.

ummm...perhaps i could help.

the fuel pump and fpr(fuel preasure regulator) and preasure gauge is a good idea. i cant remember what psi to run it at...i know a buddy with a turboed avenger is running 55psi and thats rich. ill check with him again to make sure. so perhaps 30ish is my guess....correct me if im wrong.

if youd like...i just might have a ecu for you. shoot me an e-mail at sb7217@hotmail.com that is if you would be interested...no harness...just the ecu. im just letting you know incase you are EVER interested you have somewhere to go for one.
i got a 90 pgt...but wish it was a mx-3 bp-t!

As for the axels, it is normal to have a little play. How much are you talking, it should not be more that a couple centimeters, I think?

Enough play that it makes a clunk noise everytime I release that clutch in first gear. Last time I was under the car I grabed the axle and I was able to move it side to side. It sounded like the noise I hear when I'm driving.

if you are still using the stock tranny i think you need to keep the stock axels, you can't use the BP ones.

If your really concerned about running the motor lean get a RX7 vaf as discussed in other threads.. it will help out the motors top end and was with any flap style you can adjust the spring rate and affect the air fuel ratio by doing so.. which would solve your problem.

Is this true? I need to get new axle and I want to put in the protege lx axle.

if you put in a BP tranny you need to switch to BP axels, so the B6 and BP axels must not be interchangable.
