More backpressure in exhaust does not= more torque is what I was saying.

My 2 cents...the following is for STREET ENGINES.
A BP motor that remains streetable is NOT going to go much past 210-220whp.
a DOHC B6 isnt going past 180whp.
A SOHC B6 isnt going past 170whp.
as already said, the problem is the head. Simply put, it doesnt matter how much you port and polish it...its a poor design for NA applications. Any of those motors isnt going to cost less than about 10,000 either.
Also, dont expect to go more than 30,000 miles without a rebuild.
Ti rods and pistons are not a good idea. the Cost is useless, and good steel rods would be more intelligent.

Hmmm... those numbers seem a little high for "streetable" but I guess that definition is all a matter of opinion. Either way, get ready to spend an easy $10K.
Here is a thread from miataforum.com regarding some NA hp numbers. IRTB

Well, the BP number is surely accurate, as its a tad over what Fred and Pat put down back in the mid 90s with their rally BPs. These were daily drivers, and one ended up being a winter beater. This info is combined from a couple of Vaughn's posts on the Protege and Escort Gt yahoo groups a couple years ago. I only found them by going into the archives...i believe 1999.

The SOHC was never intended to be boosted, unlike the B6 and BP which originally were designed so that Mazda could go rally racing.

Just swap in a B6T or BPT. They only way you'll get labeled a racer is if your racing or make your car flashy. When I first did my B6T every body that had me pop the hood swore I was lying when I told them it is turbo charged. There first question was always..."Where is your turbo?". Even after pointing it out and the big old APEXi Silvia inter cooler behind the front bumper, they still didn't belive. I always got comments like:
"Why do you have all this pipe in here with no turbo"
"Hey honey...look at the shiny radiator"
and stupid stuff like that.
They only reason they belived me is because I left spinning the tires through 1st,2nd, & part of 3rd with the BLOV screaming into the Atmosphere between gears.
Spend your money wisely! All motor is horrifyingly expensive compared to doing a boosted motor swap in the 4cyl MX-3. ;)

Just keep in mind MOST of your horse power is in the HEAD. The only draw back to doing the SOHC is the head won't flow NOTHING like the B6T or BPT's heads, not to mention they also have the cams profiled specificaly for turbo charging which helps give them a broader power band & more top end power! I'd still recommend the motor swaps over building the SOHC.
Just a lil food for though. ;)

im not sure of the bpt but the b6t flows less than the stock dohc mx3. the sohc is pretty restricted but i wouldnt worry about it till 250whp is reached( boosted ).

Same for the BP... Braden's best BPT head put down ~250whp. Ric's BP head Miata put down 399.6whp
