Excess gear shift play and rattle?

Post by mcgowan »

My '94 rs has a lot of play when in gear, and also rattles, I have asked mechanics and they said that could be normal, Im not so sure, any wisdom on this will help me!

I think something may be wrong with the linkage or linkage bushings, I had a VW Rabbit and I had the linkage repaired almost every year.

Now is a good time for you guys to upgrade a few parts that should fix it. Call Derrick @ Corksport 1-503-252-5700. Order their Bronze Oil shifter bushings and thier Performance shifter stabilizer bushing. Jack up your car (properly support it), crawl under it. Look at the shifter under the car, check to see if the nut & bolt are in place or if there is any play in it. Now look at the back side of the tranny on the bottom side (near the firewall & exhaust). Check to see if the nut & bolt is in the shift linkage, also check for play. Then look at the stabilzer bar's connection to the side of the tranny, make the nut is tight, also check for play. Make sure you have all your bushings too. My car's stabilizer bushing fell out so it rattles BAD & is a pain in tha *** to shift. Go ahead and get all the bushings (now would be a REALLY good time to do the short shifter also). The new bushings are MUCH stiffer than even new stock replacements. It gives you a much better shifting experiance! I used the Pace Setter Short throw, gives you flip of the wrist shifting & MUCH MUCH shorter n better looking than stock! :D
