Oil pan

Post by Jforce »

Any one got a pic of the "old" design klze's Oil pan?

Or can confirm that this one is an oil pan most klze's have?

Image

Or is this the one? Or is this the redesigned ("new" KLG4/KL 2000+) one?

Image

By old i mean this type, tube on the front valve cover:

As far as I know all KL oil pans are the same, the valve cover is a different story. Ford/mazda redesigned them mid production to remove the front breather tube on the KLG4 variants and some probes had a TSB done to remove them, thats the same front valve cover I use on my car to reduce the amount of vacuum tubes.

I've read a few times that the newer ones are supposed to be different. Redesign because nr 6 bearing often spun.

In the pics they look different, or is it just the way the pic was taken? Now that i look at it again, there a the same i think. -.-

I can't seem to find a pic of the new oilpan design.
Not all of them. I pulled off a millenia pan that was deeper than a regular KL on one of my junkyard motor swaps. I don't recall the year of the millenia, but I think it was a 98+ because it had the pressurized expansion tank for the coolant system like the newer 626s.

You'll hear a lot of "claims" that people make. Such as the one you just heard.
"Oil pan redesign... because of spun #6 bearing"

you'll also hear:
"no piston squirters.. because of spun #6 bearing"
"lighter crankshaft... because of spun #6 bearing"
"no oil cooler on oil filter adapter... because of spun #6 bearing"
"Rear back seats a different color... because of spun #6 bearing"

There are two different oil pans technically.
The 97-2000 millenia shared oil pans with the KJ engine. The KJ engine didn't use a oil pan baffle, so those years had a slightly different baffle as well.
all the other years, 01-02, and 95-96, along with all other K8 and KL engine applications in the US, used the same oil pans.

Thing is, most changes are done because of economics, fitment or emissions regulations changes. Thats why you see mismatched intake and cylinder head ports on Millenias and other changes that don't seem to make much sense.

and also because of a baffle between the block and the pan, it doesn't make sense to me a different design oil pan would make a difference. it all falls to a pan, to the oil pickup tube to get sucked back up.

Its still worth talking about now that "newer" KLs are hitting the yard. I'm going to say again. My 02 Mazda Millenia motor usdm- has a deeper oil pan than all the previous ones I've used. You will need custom work on the exhaust to get it to work with aftermarket kl headers or OEM crap piping if ur on a Budget.

The 02 millemia motor oil pan is deeper & will drag on the ground practically when you drive over a sewer etc. I ended up reinforcing the bottom of mine (lowered car). Hope this helps. The pans are different, we can talk a bunch of crap as to why it was changed (it is deeper under cylinder 6) & accept mazdas updates or still run the old setup.

*disclaimer*
This is real testimonial newer millenia KL has updated oil pan & no crap coolant lines around oil pump aswell as square camshaft caps not older weaker setup.

all my information was based on Mazda shop manuals and OEM part numbers. I believe my information of oil pans is accurate.

However I am not going to argue, but if you'd like to check, you can cross reference the part numbers for each application.

The different KL oil pans have been discussed slightly before on the mx6 board also.
Unfortunately nobody ever got to the bottom of it.

So from the part numbers listed here what I can see is the KJ oil pan was used exclusively in the KL Millenia years 1997-2000, then interchangeably 01-02.

But my assumption based on Mazda's "economic principles" is, "use leftover parts". So I would say... using the KJ oil pan wasn't to resolve any inherent KL issues... just like putting KL47 intake manifolds on KL01 heads.

Oil pan... "bottom of it..." unintended pun? Badum-pshhhh.
