No spark. [solved]

Post by Weistal67 »

So I pulled my GS into the company shop a couple days ago. Minor fiddling around checking things.

In the process I pulled a plug wire and checked a plug for wear as I have no clue as to how long it's been since they were changed.

Long story short. I put the plug back in then got side tracked with something else before putting the plug wire back on.

Went to start the car and it caught for a second then died. Realizing I forgot to reattach the wire I did so and tried again........no dice.

Car cranks but won't catch. No spark.

Tried resetting the ecu. No luck.

Basic HEI mod completed(no external coil). No spark.

So my options as I see it are my coil is shot or I fried my ecu.

I have done a lot of searching and can't find a way to test the ecu. And the details on how to test the coil were difficult to follow (at least the ones I found).

So what is my next step?

External coil?

I am fairly remote at the moment and spare parts are nonexistant. Limited cash on hand as well and I need this car running.

Any help/advice is appreciated.

BTW the car is a 1993 GS completely stock minus the hei I installed today.

I doubt he ECU was fried from a spark plug wire being off when u started it. I would bet my bottom dollar on the internal coil being no good now. You should of did the external coil when u did the HEI whats wrong with you man

Money is super tight and no one in town here stocks the MSD equipment is need for the full hei mod. Was hoping it wasnt the coil just so I could keep on the road till the 1st.

Trust me. The external coil was in the plans. Just might have to bite the bullet and be completely broke for the next few days.

Its a two day wait for my coil and power tower.

Make sure the hei is grounded well. for some reason mine did not work unless the grounding wires were on the engine (front valve cover to be exact).

if the hei feels hot or warm at all, it's not grounded properly.

@ kulluminati777. Thanks I will take you up on that if my ecu does prove to be the problem.

@ RX8SE3P. I tried a few locations but I will keep trying. Nothing else to do until I can order my coil on Monday. Valve cover will be my first attempt. Thanks for the tip. Also I have been checking the temp and nothing above ambient so far. That's what was making me think ecu or coil to begin with.

I had a similar problem with no spark after mine went down, turned out to be my VAF died, you could try unplgging a sensor at a time to see if it will start.
Knowing you've spent too much on your car,
yet, you still want to keep modding. -priceless

@ kulluminati777. I will definitely keep you guys posted on my progress. Can't order parts till Monday so I'm stuck for a few days......Maybe I can get around to doing my front wheel bearing in the mean time to keep me busy.

@ [LVPA]93GsSe. Another great idea to keep me occupied. Thank you.

How would I go about uploading pictures so I can show my current set up and catalogue my progress?

@ kulluminati777. Yes my CEL comes on when I turn the key but I have tried pulling codes and it stays blank.

Quick update on what I've got to so far.

VAF tested. Good.
HEI wiring tested. 0 resistance on all connections and grounds. Good.
Putting off doing my wheel bearing. Lazy.
Blaster 2 coil with wire and tower ordered.

Going to go make a bracket to mount my coil with. Then MAYBE motivate myself to finally get these bearings done.

Edit: So I removed the stock coil and I'd say its dead according to my readings.
Primary coil winding reads 1k ohms(should be 0.58-0.86)
Secondary coil winding reads 3.89k ohms(should be 11.5-18.5)
