I have a very original sweet 93 Base with a single cam 5 speed. The motor is
a little ticky & Ive been thinking about having more than 88 HP.
I have been reading up about how easy it is to put a BP engine in, what Im
wondering is if I put a BPD (twin Cam) is it gonna cause me a lot more grief
than BP single Cam ?
I was also wondering if thier was a Jap motor that would be a simple swap
with more HP, I cant seem to find the guide on all the Mazda motors, I know
Ive seen one somewhere in the past.
The Twin cam has quite a bit more HP but I want a real easy quick swap.
Thanks

Re: 93 B6 to BP swap question
The SOHC isn't a BP, it's B8 and has 103hp, 114hp from a 95-98 Protege.
There's several different varients of the DOHC BP, they all sit around the 130hp mark.
You want more power in stock form, you have 2 other options.
BP GTX Turbo
BP GTR Turbo
Both imported from Japan
GTX w/180hp
GTR w/210hp

Re: 93 B6 to BP swap question
This guy here: http://www.jdmtigerjapanese.com/mazda/b ... ssion.html
Is a GTX engine, GTR engines are rarer and come with a better, ball bearing turbo and sodium valves but are otherwise pretty close to the GTX. The GTR Ecu is also supposed to not have a boost cutoff whereas the GTX is supposed to have one(I've heard it's 12 lbs PSI, not sure though).
This wikipedia article has some pretty good info on Mazda B series engines.

Re: 93 B6 to BP swap question
If you are looking for quick easy power in a N/A form you have a couple of choices. The BP came in the Escort GT, Protege LX, and the Kia Sophea. They all are the same HP about 130ish to the crank. Great increase over the SOHC B6. In the 92-93 RS it is a very very easy swap. My suggestion would be to find a Kia and grab the motor and trans and axles. the trans in the Kia is stronger and the same as that in the GS or 99+ Protege.
If you keep your trans it will work as long as you use the sohc flywheel and clutch on the engine, you will also need to either find a different passenger side half shaft or a full length axle on the passenger side, which I think the SOHC had a full length axle anyways.
The ECU is straight forward, find a Protege LX ECU or BP10 coded ECU and just plug it in! you "can" use your VAF but it will limit the BP, so best to find the proper VAF as well. That's it! Instantly a 1K higher redline whoop whoop
The only other thing if you wanted to spend a bit more time you could find a BPZE motor from Japan and swap in, they have a few extra ponies as the cams are supposed to be a little more aggressive. but they are getting few and far between unless its from a Miata. You can convert the Miata engine to FWD with a few different parts from the FWD model. oil pan, oil pickup, coolant plug, FWD coolant thermostat housing, and FWD intake and exhaust manifolds.
Other than that the only differences are a big nose crank and a small nose crank, small nose is "supposed" to be not as good for boosted motors but I am running one. Small nose cranks were only used in the pre 94' era.
IMO I would use the Kia, I have done two BP swaps with Kia BP's and trans in two different cars. Generally you can find a Kia BP for next to nothing they tend to be a fraction of that of their Mazda or Ford counterpart. same with the trans. Last ones I picked up were 250 for engine and trans from the pull a part.

Re: 93 B6 to BP swap question
Thanks for the great answer
I was thinking of the Kia route also but when I look online, the only sephias
for sale are 2000 & 2001 year models.
Either they all fell apart or the older models were not sold in Canada (Quebec).
I may have to go with the protege LX or escort variant.
again, thanks
