I just drove home from the gym, about 10 minutes ago. Pulled into the driveway, and opened the door to get out... Right as I went to shut down the engine I hear this hellish noise: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AItQ6z6Eeg

As this is my only car that is currently drivable... I'm a little freaked. I won't have the '93 on the road for a few more days now, and school/work depend on transportation!

Oh dear, that sounds scary. Best of luck getting it taken care of, that sound reminds me of a wood chipper.

Indeed... It's loud as hell, It started as I rolled to a stop in the driveway. I'm freaking out to be honest, I've had bad luck with both cars lately.

Check oil.. Possibly drain it and have a look for metal in it... If that is ok, you might have something coming loose a bolt perhaps in the bell housing to do with your clutch..

Is this car auto or 5 speed?

I'll check the oil again. I've been losing almost a quart every 1,000-1,200 miles for a few months now, so I've been checking it daily.

She's a 5 speed K8, unmodified.

Oil is good at more than 80% full, but my alternator belt is torn to royal Sh*t. I wouldn't have noticed if pieces of it weren't all over the bay. :x It's still in place, shocking as it may sound... Half of it at least, and the damn thing is still spinning the pulleys. But it's literally torn to hell.

The belt is ~12k miles old.

That sounds rough!! So the alternator belt was causing that noise or is it just a coinidence?

Take the belt off, and start the car. If the noise is gone, you got lucky. If it's still there, I'd open the oil pan and check all the bearing cap bolts (main and connecting rod), and, if they're all good, I'd check all the bearings.

It could be a couple things. First I would check your exhaust manifolds and downpipes, sounds WAY too loud. Almost sounds like the timing has jumped. What end of the car did you take the sound clip from?

Could be the bearings, check your oil, you may have to drop the pan and pull one of the caps.

In the NW section of MX6 there is a guy selling a running DE for 250, compression is 180 all across the board... FYI

I'll pop the belt off right now, simple enough test...

My exhaust has some leaks farther back, but the noise is definitely brand new. My K8 has been tap free since I did the FGS replacement last year.

That vid was from the engine bay, hood open. I was actually about 10 feet away because of the noise... Protecting the phone, ya know.

If it's in engine rebuild territory, I'll go to Portland and pick out a KLG4 from the wreckers... I can't afford the downtime. Portland area wreckers have some amazing prices, compared to what I'm used to.

Cut the belt, noise is gone. A little tappier than before, but that could be in my head.
I guess I'll kill 2 birds with one stone and get a non A/C belt, since I'm already doing all the work.
For once it looks like the problem was simple... But why would a relatively new belt just shred like that? The damn thing was still spinning the accessories, but down to 2 ribs on half the belt.

Dan, did you really have to go there?

Check the pulleys. Make sure the ribs are not deformed, or cracked/missing sections. Also, make sure they're properly aligned. If everything is ok, just get a high quality replacement (Dayco or Gatorgrip are the best I know), and keep the receipt. IIRC, Dayco has a 3 year warranty.
