difference between kl31 and kl36 ecu?
hey.
i'm about to have almost everything for my curved neck ZE swap and i've been seaching in this forum for my question, without luck, so..
i've just bought a kl31 ecu and a kl36 ecu for 200$, but i'm wondering wich one to use with my je50 vaf? is there any difference between those?
and are both chippable? because i want to get it tuned in after the swap.

No difference. It was said that the KL31 was for manual, and the KL36 was from an auto, but they've been found in their counterparts.
Chipping a KL3x ECU is a waste of money. Ya, they're chippable, but why chip a $200 ECU than you can get a K8 ECU for like $20 and chip that?
Also, you don't really "tune" with a chip. You can let the programmer of the chip know what kind of mods you have and he'll flash it accordinly, but it's not like Kpro. You can't get it tuned at a dyno, if that's what your thinking, but you can get it optimized for your car before you get the chip.

i got both ecu's for 200$.. 
i don't know the difference between optimizing and chipping, but it was not tuning i was thinking of, more something like a adjusting to the ecu for my engine. what do you mean by optimizing before getting a chip?
theres a company here, that can chip my car and get about 10hp from it, but is that actually chipping or optimizing?, because they're doing it at a dyno.

i was looking into how this dyno chipping is done recently. basically they hook up an eprom emulator, which is basically a chip with a usb plug so you can plug it into a computer and modify the code in real time. they then use the readings from the dyno and build a complete custom tune which would be similar to a tune on a stand alone ecu (megasquirt). they would then burn this tune onto a eprom and put it on the ecu. its basically the same as a probinator chip but its completely customized to your car.
the problems i herd about is that our cars are not extremely popular. each ecu has different programming and the fuel and timing maps are in different locations in the hexadecimal code. to be able to tune this way you need to know how the specific ecu is programmed and where each map is located within the code. if you have ever seen programming code you would know how difficult this is (think of hundreds of pages of random numbers and letters). this is popular for hondas because the code has been cracked and programs have been made that make tuning extremely cheap and easy. unless your local shop has experience tuning klze's i doubt theyd be able to modify the code in any reasonable amount of time or cost.

Added the KLZE two years ago, have driven 22,000 flawless (as far as engine controls goes, at least) miles using the K8 air flow sensor and a KL36 ECU.
Only comment is the the idle occasionally sets at 1,000 instead of a normal 750 or so. It does react to the clutch switch (idle goes up a little with the clutch depressed) and it reacts properly to headlamps, the second blower setting of 4, the a/c, and when you put lots of power steering load on the car.

Both ECU's are thesame, you'd need to run a JE50 Vaf though
Chipping is also in my opinion a waste of money. There are other performance mods that will give you more gain. (like fast stikkers

I believe the kl36 has a governor & kl31 does not (true on kl36, but i havent ever ran a kl31). To remove the governor on a kl36 you cut a wire check it out on pt.

Yes the old cutting of the wire. If the ECU can see your speed it can't govern right. There's info right here on this forum about this. 180km/h limiter. There's a wire that does from the speedo to the ECU, I've got a few threads on it, cutting that wire should remove the limiter, but I can't confirm it, no one had said if it worked or not. My KL36 came from Lazzyie and didn't have a limiter and many times hit over 200

My KL36 does not have a rev limiter on it, but then again I have not looked at the harness to see if someone has snipped it
When I was getting into heavily looking for a proper KL ECU I ran into several things some said it was ATX (kl31) to MTX (KL36), others said it was the difference between straight neck or curve neck models, I have also heard that it could have been for different cams, as we all know some KLZE motors don't have KL31 cams
what I really would like to know is has anyone swapped in an OBDII KLZE ECU into a 96 car? the OBDII KLZE ecu's can be had for more than half the price of a KL36 or KL31 ECU.
@ O.P. - you would be better off getting yourself a piggyback system then trying to get your ZE ecu re tuned.

01 cams would be on the same motor with a curved neck pretty much, but people did suspect KL01 cams for autos, 31's for manual. Curved-neck came out of the Millenia (and Japanese counterparts) and those were all OBDII, so couldn't get a KL31/36 ECU with a curved neck
I'm assuming it's the same as doing the OBDII conversion from a domestic Millenia and go MAF.

What I really want to try is a millenia ecu with the MAF & millenia engine bay harness. All while keeping mx3 instruments working. I think that's the last Mazda-made option that nobody has tried yet.
