Engine Heads

Post by Ryan »

Okay, I realize the potential for this being a dumb question....

is it possible to swap a V6 head onto the DOHC I4? The patterns most likely won't match, eh? what about cams? Can you KLZE cam a DOHC I4?

Thanks for satisfying my curiosity :)

:?: :?: :!:
I'm going to be nice.
The I4 has 4 cylinders. The V6, having 6, has 3 per head. Nothing would match in any way. The best thing that you can do for your head, is port and polish it, see if you can put in bigger valves, and get a cam regrind.

Okay, now I'm still thinking. I realized this is potential for continuous flaming, but...

Are the rocker arms exchangeable? I have never owned a v6 so I have no idea... just 3 cyls instead of 4. If the shafts were the same diameter, are the lobes and springs positioned differently? What exactly wouldn't work, Camwise?

This is now educational, instead of simply stupid :P

Pwahaha.
Let's go back, a little, and from a different anlge.. What are you trying to gain, or save?
I asked a while ago if 4 cyl plug wires would work on a V6 because I could get good ones for free, and just leave 2 of my old ones on..
So, what's your angle?

I won't bother defending myself, because I know its futile...

But,

I was reading about KL01 and KL31 cams and blah blah people love KL31. I was wondering if you could fit that gain onto the 4 cyls. I asked about the entire head because I figured that would be easiest (never thought about the cyl difference, maybe v8 was in my head :P) So, what about the cams(no) or the rocker arms (maybe) or the valves (maybe)

Thats my angle.

Well, that's the kind of forward thinking that causes innovation :)
What you can do is have your cams reground for higher lift, longer duration, etc... That is the difference between the 01, and 31 cams. It is a good investment, for more power. Also, the ZE heads are freer flowing, so you can have your head machined for that. My heads are DE, but are ported/ polished to flow as well, or better than ZE. You can do this to the IM too.
If you're interested, get a book at the library, or research online about hot rodding.

kl31 cams... kl31 cams... that word is ringing a bell with me...
where have I heard those before...

Ryan, have you read about gains from miata camshafts? if you're looking for cheaper gains, that's the most sensible upgrade according to some performance b6'ers.

Yes, SuperK. Although, personally, I'm not interested. Not any time soon at least. That and I'm not sure where I would find them.... are they an aftermarket item, or the stock cams from some miatas?
