Anyone else keep fuel logs?

Post by Dark_Rider2k3 »

I've been using this site http://www.mycarprojects.net and it's been great for keeping logs about your car. One of the things it does well is shows a graph chart of your fuel economy. Any time I go fill up on gas I just turn on the android app and punch in the information it needs (miles traveled, gallons used, money spent) and then it updates my MPG's. Currently my log looks like this:

4/23/11- 27.733 MPG
4/28/11- 25.832 MPG
5/02/11- 19.016 MPG
7/12/11- 24.128 MPG
7/16/11- 29.086 MPG

It's showing that since I started logging, I've driven 1,087 miles, used 43.338 gallons of gas, and spent $177.30. My average MPG 's are 25.098.

It also has a chart showing MPG's logged, average MPG's, Price per gallon, and Miles per dollar

But yeah just curious if anyone else logs their MPG's as well.

I just use the trip (nice with the X and 8 both have dual trips) and I just keep it in my head. I know the best tanks I've had on each and on what trip I did it with, and I know the fuel gauge well enough to know what my distance should be at each 1/4 mark interval. Unfortunately when I drove home Friday I didn't reset the trip when I filled up, figuring my milleage would of been pretty bad with about an extra 1000lbs of passengers of gear and driving pretty hard (and on my 32's) to get the guys to the airport (with about 15min to spare) but with mapping software like Google Maps or Streets and Trips, I can easilly map the route, get the distance drove and figure out my MPG. Despite the extra work, I only took an 11% hit in mileage off her best best tank, with street tires and an empty truck. Considering how moody she gets, I actally consider that to be negligable, but it's good to know that even after putting 75'000kms on her that she's running good.

I perfer not to keep track of the fuel spent. What I spend on fuel is what I spend, that's it that's all, but it's good to keep track to make sure the car/truck/vehicle is in proper running order.

I used to keep hand calculated log in my car, just to see how much I get. I get pretty consistent mpg

Every time I get a car, for the first few months, I keep a detailed log of the miles I drive, and the type and amount of fuel I use, so I can see how the engine reacts to different fuels. I've always done it by hand, though.
Thanks for the link, it will hopefully be very useful in the future. :D

One question: why did you get that drop to 19 mpg? Heavy foot?

I actually can't figure that one out. That's my only guess really .

Hmmm...that's about a 35% down from your maximum... :confused2:

I suggest you keep notes on other details, like where you drive, any changes to your routine, any work on he car, so you can understand where the differences come from, and act upon that knowledge.

For example, back in '05, I drove my '92 rs from Miami to Leesburg, VA. Up to the moment I entered VA, I was getting about 36 mpg (I drove mostly at night, so there was no traffic). Then, there was black ice on the road, so everybody slowed down to about 20-30 mph, which, coupled with an overcooling issue I started having, made me drive, for the rest of my stay in VA, in 2nd and 3rd gear. When I got back home, my final mileage for the trip was 30 mpg, on the dot.

I think that was around the time I had my clutch issue. But I'm not home to check my car log

I've kept a car log for both of my cars since I've had them... It's just a notebook in the glovebox... this includes EVERY gas fill up as well as any other thing done to the car (parts, upgrades, belts, everything)

It's really useful when I need to see when I last replaced something (mileage/date).

I use a free app on my iPhone. Not too many bells and whistles but it tells me that I'm getting 9.3L/100km (25.3mpg) since April.

There is a website called fuelly.com.. I think seems to be a decent tracker. Not the greatest but basic.
