Best spark plugs for stock 1.6 B6-DE ?

Post by specialtyneed »

I really liked how the NGK .07" fine wire iridium plugs performed in my Suzuki built engine in my '94 metro 1.0L 3 cyl which now has almost 300k miles on it. Nascar at least used to use them, they were more durable and gave similar superior results like the .04" fine wire iridium Nippon Denso plug that performed very well in my 3.0L V6 Nissan quest we had until a kid took an illegal left in front of my wife. I only use them in Japanese flow cyl heads as there is considerable doubt and growing evidence as to the longevity and performance of the Bosch plugs in anything not German (at least last time I checked). Anyhow, of the assortment of plugs available currently please chime in on your long term best spark plug type and number results on a stock (OEM) normally aspirated (no boost or mods) 1.6L L4 DOHC B6-DE engine of the '94-'95 vintage.

Yeah.... I don't think anyone has wasted their money dynoing a B6 N/A.

The vast consensus is just to get NGK V powers.

I don't really know if the Op is serious or not, but, just for the record, when I had my '91 Protege (B8), I installed a set of Bosh Platinum 4 in it. 80,000 miles later, when I junked the car (and kept the engine and tranny), I took the plugs off and put them in my recently bought '92 MX-3 (B6E), which I sold , with the spark plugs still in, about 45,000 miles later. So I would say that's a pretty good longevity for a "non German flow" engine, wouldn't you think?

Re: Best spark plugs for stock 1.6 B6-DE for MPG?

Post by specialtyneed »

I am fishing for High MPG best practice solutions for the B6-DE.

As to prevent confusion I did not get specific about the bosch platinums I was referring to. The single electrode ones are the plugs that we have found which tend to erode fast in engines and tax the ignition coil. Like ones that run hot with high compression at high rpms i.e. metro 1.0L and the Subaru 1.8L/2.0-2.5L interposed boxers.

For the record I am serious these questions and they are due to some hypermiling we do which is far divorced from the performance some of you are into so the quip about it is only a B6 is really not helping and only hurting this board.

The principles for high mileage are opposite from the performance goals and therefore the methodology is not the same and usually opposite in logic. Example is the thermodynamic efficiency of the engine, using max cool in the cooling system hurts MPG. The head on my metro is the best one ever made is hemispherical and eats up certain plugs & gets revved up to 15k. Sometimes it gets driven like I stole it in traffic with only 50 hp and 9.5:1 comp. I expect a plug to hold up for 50-100k mi if I invest in expensive ones and believe in avoiding experimenting when possible. IC engines tend to be finicky about which plug performs best for MPG not power in them. I am talking about the lean side of the best power curve (W). I am fishing for that answer. I will not just throw whatever in it. There is a racing class and very knowledgeable people out there for about every vehicle & engine out there. I happened to get to pick the brain of a guy who he and his daughter raced the metro and won a lot (they got 150hp out of it) so I know stuff nearly no one else does about pushing a nearly stock setup to the limit and about that particular engine.

Does anyone know the resonance solution for the MX-3 B6-DE? Continued in resonance solution post...

Now I have MX-3 now I want to know about as much about the B6-DE. Unless I ask questions it is hard to find someone with the answers.
