1994 MX3 1.6 DOHC AT Problems

Post by savvy5473 »

Hi all,

When i put my transmission into gear, any gear, the idle drops down to 100 ish and then usually stalls out. When I can catch it by giving it some throttle, it will then clunk into gear and I can get her up to 3 to 4k RPM and the car is accelerating very very slow.

I don't know but this may be two seperate problems.

Also when the fan comes on or even stepping on the brakes, the idle drops down to stall as well.

Any ideas?

Can anyone tell me which transmission this is?? the VIN is 308726. 1994 mx3 1.6 DOHC Auto Trans.

Thanks

you have an f series automatic trans, you can get one from a 91-96 escort gt as well as other mx-3s. Its a f4eat, the idle drop sounds like a vacuum problem, brake booster leaks are pretty easy to check, start the car and with it in P press the brake see if the idle drops down to close to stall, if it does then the brake booster is leaking, also check the intake tube they have a tendency to crack. Clean the throttlebody with some carb cleaner or throttlebody cleaner, and take care of any vac leaks. Now as for the trans not shifting correctly start with changing the fluid and filter, it probably has never been done and is long overdue. Once you have the basics done let me know how you make out and I can help you troubleshoot further.

Sorry, I failed to mention that it was doing this before and I have already changed the transmission filter and fluid (well pan fluid that is) which was about 1.5 to 2 litres of fluid.

I am going to check the vacuum lines today and pull the TB and clean up the IAC circuit and reset the IAA and adjust the butterfly and TPS.

also check to see if it starts in gears other than P and N that will tell you if the neutral safety switch/trans range switch is messed up.
