SuperK wrote:if you're concerned about weak spark, few dollars will get you a proper spark test, you put it on the end of the wire and adjust the distance on hte screw to test the voltage.
remember, you took a picture of black combustion chamber on the cylinder head. that's oil. weak spark won't turn the chamber black, oil will. looking at your pictures where the head gasket wasn't cleaned off the head gasket had no oil leaks or blows that would validate the head gasket as the main culprit in your smoking issues. A blown head gasket is very noticable, the fact that this is a issue that's most prominent in 3 cylinders leads me to believe... rings.
if you were dumping gas in the chambers the raw fuel has a tendency of cleaning gunk... and it didn't look clean, I don't thinkyou're putting any more fuel in those chambers than you're supposed to.
I've come to the belief that I'm not overfueling, just not burning it properly at first. a richer mixture (like a cold engine gets) is going to take a little stronger spark to burn, I would think. I have a couple cheap spark testers of different kinds, but neither one is adjustable. I put an old spark plug on # 1 wire, and clamped it to the engine. you can barely see the spark, and it's orange. you should hear it snapping from a few feet away, and it should be nice and blue. yes, there is a little bit of oil being burned, but I don't care about that.
Re: what the hell is wrong with my car?
Your smoking issue will NEVER be because of a weak spark. Never, not in these engines. Never.

I suggest you change your distributor, plugs, and wires.
Then when its still burning oil, you can practice proper trouble shooting, come to a proper (and correct) diagnosis, after spending the unnecessary $400.

Sounds to me like he's got it pretty much under control. He seems to know the flaws in all of our logic. I imagine he'll have it running tip top in no time.

Re: what the hell is wrong with my car?
hey, I know, why don't I just swap a bp into it, throw a body kit on it, and maybe a set of rims? Then maybe somenoe will be able to give me a hand with it! that's all this site's good for anyway. I have explained my problem a million times, but everyone seems to think, just because this is something unusual, that I must be wrong about what's happening! just because you've never run into a problem doesn't mean it doesn't exist! For one last time: I AM NOT CONCERNED WITH THE SMALL AMOUNT OF OIL BEING BURNED, BUT RATHER THE MASSIVE CLOUD OF INCOMPLETE COMBUSTION STINKING UP THE DAMN NEIGHBORHOOD EVERY MORNING!!!!

Re: what the hell is wrong with my car?
Hey now...be fair. Not one person suggested putting a body kit on your car would fix the problem. Unless if by body kit you mean piston rings...in that case yeah...do that.

Re: what the hell is wrong with my car?
Yeah, we know. We say, "do leakdown and compression tests", have you? no! You say its fuel? No way! combustion chambers would not have had that carbon build up if it were just running rich. You don't care about a little blue smoke at start up? But that is probably the freakin' cause of all of it! Fuel does not cause the car to smoke like that. My mustang runs extremely rich at start up, and you can smell it, but does it smoke? not in the slightest.myfirstmazda wrote:it's like talking to a wall.
You ask for help. We tell you what to do, step by step, to give a proper diagnosis, but you don't do it. you keep saying its fuel and not doing the damn tests! If you're a mechanic, then act like one and do PROPER procedures instead of being stubborn.
If by some chance you're right and it is fuel, guess what? NO ONE will care. You want to know why? Because you won't even do some simple tests to rule out if its the rings or not.
Do us a favor, do the freakin' tests like instructed for diagnosing, or stop posting, really.

Re: what the hell is wrong with my car?
Geez man!!!
Rings can cause what's happening to your car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But again without a proper compression test we can't go any further with this issue.
They should be telling you "it's like talking to a wall"
Seriously.. I bet you ask ANY reputable shop around your area and they ask if you've done a compression test yet.....
