Polished MX rims??

Post by SteeleMX3 »

Has anyone on this site or possibly another forum polished their OEM rims so I can see what they look like? I'm thinking about it but is the result worth the back-breaking effort...
btw I'm on the old rims, '92 GS.

cheers

I'm actually going to be doing it this summer. I did my intake manifold. That was a pain because of all the nooks and crannies. The wheels should be a lot simpler. I won't be starting until I get my RX8 out for the summer. If I remember I'll try take some pictures and post them.

They are texturized, eh?
They will be super hard to get shiny, and they'll oxidize right away again..
Now with Moderator power!

Yea, I bet getting all the texture out is going to be a pain, but good luck.
You can clear coat them after you get them polished so they won't oxidize Ryan.

I've heard about that clear powder coat thing to prevent oxidization as well. I think that'll be a must if they do get polished this summer.

I did this once with my bro. The casting texture comes out... but what a pain. We did it all by hand. It's a mess and will cause a few blisters. Once you start you have to finish. Get some nice tools to help you out. The polish did not seem to fade either.

If you polish them with a good product, the product will leave a little bit of a protective coat, and the surface will be so smooth that it would be harder for oxidization to "get into" the metal. You'd have to clean them alot, anyway, so if you see oxidization, you can easily rub it off with the polish material.

By the end of next week I should have my rims off and starting to shine them puppies up. I'm bringing my RX8 out for the summer so I can work on the 3. Last fall it was new struts all around. Now its new Calipers, rotors, pads, SS brake lines. New front bumper and new hood. This should be fun.
