Timing Belt issue. Second Time in 2 months.

Post by ooELMOoo »

So 2 months ago my timming belt started squeeling(Yes, the back of the belt can rub against the cover to make a squeeling sound). About 1 week later, it broke.

I got it replaced and everything was fine until 2 days ago, and it's back. When I start my car it sqeels for about 1 minute. Then it is fine, until I shut my car off and it cools down for a bit.

Any idea's?

-Tensioner getting stuck?
-Pullies lose?

How do you know it's not a serpentine belt?

True, I am keeping my fingers crossed for that. It is just showing the exact same symptoms as last time.

Hoping that it is the serpentine belt, and not the timming belt AGAIN.

That means it could be...
->My pullies are polished or glazed
->The bearings in the tensioner/idler pulleys are shot
->tensioner has lost its tentsion

What is the Best way to tell if it is your serpentine belt?

take both serpentine belts off and start the car !

no squealing and problem solved. dont leave it running obviously. should just need a few seconds to tell

or you could check the tension of both belts first and tighten if necessary.start the car. should have ~1/4" deflection if it still squeals try it without the belts

I am having one of those days today.

I will just get some anit-squeal and throw it on the serpentine, See if that makes any difference.

Thanks for putting up with my dumb questions, work just makes me so dumb sometimes!

belt lube is only a quick fix for people too lazy to tighten or replace a worn belt.

it also deteriorates the rubber even faster

I agree! It is just to see if that is the problem or not.

Looking at my pulleys, they look very shinny, I will look in the manual on how to pull off the buggers!

Thanks

a light spray of water will work as 'dressing' too.

In my current black car, one of the timing idlers lost the running surface, it was really weird. It caused the belt to run, and rub on the pullies funny and break.
