I4 to V6 question just read....

Post by 1992mx3 »

For you that have swapped from a four to a six in an RS frame of coarse, would you do it again or would you hold out for a GS and swap?
I have the motor harness and computer in my MX-6 and was curious if any of you would do it again. I know there are some differences between the two but.

I would personally not do this swap, as it gets rid of the advantages of the 4cyl, with all the disadvantages of the 4banger mx3.

A more worthwhile swap would be to go from a v6 mx3 to a 4banger...although I like the v6's better.

The RS did not come w/ rear disks or as beefy a suspension (though the differences are slight).

Lighter, easier to work on, cheaper to fix, cheaper and easier to turbo, better gas mileage, more engine bay room, cooler engine bay temps.

As for any other advantages, I either can't think of them at the moment or don't agree with them. Some people here will tell you they're easier to make faster, but I'd much rather have the low end V6 power, engine balance and sweet sound.

I don't care if the 4 banger is easier to turbo and make power with, nothing will make me give up the amazing sound of the V6, alot of people here think that way too.

Hey, I didn't say I would either. I'm just saying it's more worth waiting for a GS than converting to a V6.

That's true, I would only conver to V6 if I had a pristine RS and was willing to buy new parts.

That's just it. I fully plan on taking the car to the bare frame and buying all new everything I can get. The motor is being rebuilt forged from the crank up except, chrome rods. In other words I can get an RS frame for way cheaper than a GS and was more currious as to the extent of motor mounts tranny mount cross member etc etc.

Pretty much everything forward of the firewall needs to be swapped out.

I figured that but would I have to weld new placements for the motor and tranny mounts? Or do both motors mount at the same place. I have everything I need firewall forward I'm just currious as to how much welding and such I'd have to do. Thanks to all for your input.

You best bet is to get a parts car. I don't think there is much, if any welding required if you have everything in your possession.
