You can get one respun for anywhere from $175-$350. My local shop wanted $350 so I bought a used one from a guy for $185... Works great!

Re: Very high output alternator (200A+)
I have a respun 185amp alternator on my BP. I honestly don't notice any abnormal change in idle when it kicks on. It sure does keep my voltage at 14.4 even with my kicker kx1200.1 pushing out its max power to my L7...

Re: Very high output alternator (200A+)
Oh and I say go for it. I don't have A/C in my car and have been thinking about doing this same thing for years... Being an electrican and HVAC guy I really think it would work, atleast get you 10-12 degrees cooling at worst!
Re: Very high output alternator (200A+)
Well I should have all the gear on my testbench before the end of next week.
If it works out well.. I wonder if anyone would be interested in a kit. It would cost about $1k (including the alternator) but would be like 30-40lbs lighter than stock, no freon, more efficient (ironically), more reliable, plus free up room for a belt driven SC.

Re: Very high output alternator (200A+)
I think it will definitely work. I'm not sure how much cooling it will offer, I have no familiarity with this kind of system. My only remaining question is how much cooling is required for the hot side of the Peltier. I think your 500L/Hr pump is a little overkill, but it will certainly do the job.I look forward to your test results.

Pah. All you need for that is a belt driven vandagraph generator. Screw all these stupid magnets and voltage regulators.Flyer wrote:All this talk baout high output alternators and no one has turned it into a telsa coil-type weapon?

Re: Very high output alternator (200A+)
Unfortunately I've just been too damned busy with my bathroom reno:

It started as a weekend project to re-tile the floor, but there was so much rot and gunk in there, I ended up gutting the entire bathroom (right down to the floor joists). Now I've done plumbing (hot/cold and drains), electrical, structural changes (for the shower), tiling, grouting, concrete (floors, shower), insulation, vapor barriers, drywall, taping & plastering, painting, etc., etc., etc. Long couple months.
So I haven't had much time to work on the MX-3. As you can see by the picture though, I'm getting pretty close. I should be done in another week and I can take a crack at the A/C. Unfortunately it's already cool in Montreal so I probably won't get much use of it this year, even if it does work.
