Which side of the engine is "right" and code 23

Post by 400bird »

Well, my 92 gs threw a code 23
what would you guys recommend checking?

And like the title says which side of the engine is the right side?
I mean the engine is mounted sideways, so I see a front and rear sensor...

Thanks,
Jon

I don't remember what the codes are, but they are in a FAQ. Just search "V6 engine codes". The right side is the front.

right and left bank of an engine are always referenced from when looking at the accessory drive pulleys. Just so's ya know.

K, thanks guys. I was under the same assumption too.
But, to make sure I disconnected the front o2 sensor and it threw a code 17, which is for the left bank.

I also was reading through something else in the online factory repair manual and it said the egr tube bolted into the right exhaust manifold.

So, thats where my confusion comes from.

I, like you guys thought the front would be the right bank but it seems as though my mx-3 has other ideas...

I guess I will clear the codes and disconnect the rear sensor and see what numbers come up...

Double check in the online shop manual but I am pretty sure that Right is Rear. At least that's how I remember it.

I looked through the manual for something to identify which bank is which, but to no avail...
Any idea where it might say?

I just did a head gasket job this past summer and the rear is definitely the right.... The transmission is connected to the rear of the engine so facing the rear of the engine, the right side is on your right. facing the accessory belts and crank is the front but the right cylinder head is on your left and the left cylinder head is on your right. I went through a large section of the shop manual doing the head gaskets and I KNOW, when facing the front of the car, the rear cyl. head is def the right one.

I'm not the most experienced engine builder, but I'm sure that's the first time I've seen that.

Learned something today.

Thanks guys.
This is definitely something new to me, I have always seen the cylinder banks labeled left and right from the front of the engine.
I guess Mazda had their own ideas on that one.

Its a good thing I checked before I just replaced the front o2 sensor for codes 23 and 24...

Any sources for a cheep o2 sensor?

Well, I learned something new to. Sorry for the wrong info. Every other engine I've dealt with (German, Japanese, American, etc..) Have always been how Wytbishop said.
I'm glad I read this...
I just thought of something.. This is why it didn't help when I replaced a bad O2 sensor  :?
