Hunting deamons.. from under the hoooodd.

Post by stigler »

I've got one for you all.
I have a 1992 MX3 4 banger, runabout that my wife drives to work and back mostley. One day not so long ago she came home, parked the car, drove the other car for a few days then had to go back to work, NOTHING.. the car would turn over but would not start. So of course the first question was, how was it running and did it sputter? No, she said, she said it was running perfect.

So I did the usual testing, spark and ignition.. Good. I ohmed everything, whithin spec. Checked the fuel filter, clean(new anyway) pulled the fuel pump, replaced it...... NOTHING. New fuel pump... NOthing.

So this is fun. :) I have checked the fuses, it does have a good timing belt (new)..

I am wondering if the fuel pump relay is out... or something to that effect. Any thoughts?

No check engine light, and I dont' have a code reader.. Perhaps I can get one.
Checked all spark, and it does have spark at all plugs.
I did put a new fuel pump in it and that didn't change anything. :|

Sort-of at a loss really.

P.S. High five on owning a Mazdaspeed6.. I love mine!

Home made code reader.. a paper clip.
Open the diag box..
Jump GND to TEN
put the car in the "ON position" and do not start it. Count your CEL's. Refer to the online manual for codes/meanings.

Have you tried to start it and see if you have fuel on your plugs or smell it on a plug? Maybe pull the fuel line and see if you get fuel @ the rail.

Your fuel pump relay is by your ECU under the radio on the "hump" between the footwells.

oh.. and I LOVE my MS6 :) unfortunatley im on my second one..

I am sorry I am not familiar with the CEL term.. But I will do that! thanks. I did pull the fuel line off of the fire wall filter and nothing came out, that is why I replaced the fuel pump, put the new fuel pump in and just put it back together to see if it would start.
THis is something I left out.. when the car first showed these problems, if it had been sitting for a day or two and I tried to start it it would start, idle up then die, no prodding of the pedal would keep it running no matter how fast I was on the pedal it did not make a difference. Now it isn't doing that it is just turning over.

Our Speed has been in the shop for the first recall and now awaiting its number 2 and 3 recalls to be done, plus a set of tires. If it keeps this engine light on and off business up after the "fix" I may get something else.. too bad Mazda didn't do it completly right the first time, tis a wonderful car.

CEL= Check engine light.
Check that fuel pump relay.

Did you get the clutch recall? if not.. do it! I had my turbo replaced at the same time.

I only got to drive it on my 06 MS6 ~ 50 miles before this happened.

Its already done on my 07, and I love it.

I also had my 2 recalls done less than a month ago. The did an ECU reprogram and replaced he purge vavle. That causes most CELS, that or a loose gas cap.

Remember, you'll lose some low end torque with the new reprogram, but is so much easier to drive in the city. Seems as if the powerband is more linear and more top-end too.

Duh check engine light!! lol Not enough coffee this morning. That was my next step though to check the relay.. just seems logical.. thing has 163k on it, probably time. How are the fuel pumps on these cars longevity wise? SHould I just leave the new one in at 163k or put the old one back and get my money back?

I didn't know about the clutch recall... Mine is fine though, or so it seems, and I have had the purge valve done once.. :D Great! lol.

163k, maybe keep it.

Theres your recal. Just say its hard to drive. The engagement is too high and keeps your wife from being able to drive it. That being said, if your stranded somewhere, how will you get home if she cant drive it? :)

Thats what I said.. and it was done :) besides.. it was a new clutch. They have to replace alot of parts, so it took them about a week. Only thing, its only warrantied for 1 year.

She does tell stories of looking like a crazy woman because she can't take off slow. Thanks.

I'll replace those relays or at least check them and do the CEL test wenst I get a chance.

I taught my wife in my old Explorer Sport 5 speed manual. Then she bought a Mazda3 manual... now she won't have anything but a manual she loves it. She likes the control.

I'll let ya know if the relays are the hub-ub. I have had an electrical problem with the car, One of the previous owners was a dip.5... could be the issue.

Jump pins GND-F/P - this will force the fuel pump to be on when you turn on the ignition - and then check for fuel flow/pressure.....
Normally the fuel pump is turned on only when the computer "sees" an airflow into the engine - you can also "simulate" airflow by manually pushing the vane in the air flow sensor....

Well I did the F/P to ground.. I could hear the relay click, inside the car... but no fuel. I suppose now I need to check the leads at the fuel pump? Perhaps something has happend to the wiring? :freak:

Thats easy enough to check - make sure the pump actually runs - you can hear a slight hum beneath the backseat (if its running) - or you can take it out and test for 12v at the pump connector.
