What Distributor for 92 MX3?

Post by Mx3_Granny »

Hi All,

Well the scanner at the shop confirmed what Neutral suspected...bad distributor.

I towed the little car back to my shop with my Scout and now I am going to replace the distributor. Apparently there are two distributors, the difference being the rotor shaft diameters. Do you guys know where this measurement is taken?

Also, I see that there is a new distributor available on EBAY for about $200 and a rebuilt one at the parts store is about $300. Anyone have any advice on which distributor to put in and where to get it?

Finally, when I go to time the motor, what is the basic procedure? On my GM cars I jumper A and B at the diagnositc box to override the computer. Is it the same process on a 92 MX3 with 1.6 motor? If so, what pins do I jump and what is the timing supposed to be set at?

I think I found a manual at the library, cant check it out but I can copy the pages. I will check there in case nobody here knows the timing process.

Thanks!

Setting your initial timing has been covered many times. Jump TEN & GND at the diagnostic box, Set your timing to 10 degrees BTC, shut down and remove the jumper from the diagnostic box.

As for finding the proper distributor.. take your rotor off and take it with you to the parts store. If it fits.. you have the right one. Also, note the build date just inside your drivers door on the door frame. Most times the correct part can be indexed via the build date as long as you know it. If going to mazda.. take the VIN number as well.

Thanks Tunes. Sorry for not searching for the timing, I should have known better. Timing procedure sounds simple enough. The parts stores dont stock the distributor so I will measure what I can and if it isnt the correct part we will order the other one.

Have you tried changing the ignition module - its good to rule it out first.

Rockauto has some good disty prices -

Changing the ignition module was my first choice until I found it was $95. So to be sure I had the engine diagnosed with a scanner and it showed a failed distributor. If the module was around $20 like on most GM cars I would have swapped a new one in and kept one for a spare in case that wasnt the problem.

Thanks for the RockAuto Link, once I figure out what distributor I have I might order one from them.

Thanks for the links. Last night I bought a new distributor from RockAuto. I will post the results when I get the new one installed.

Okay, the new lookiing distributor at EBAY for $75 seems hard to beat. Has anyone tried one of these? See [post above with EBAY link.

Thanks for the offer.

We cancelled our order with Rock Auto and got a used one off Ebay for $30. Should have it back together this weekend, hopefully that was the problem.

We put the disty in this morning and it started right up. Timed the engine and it is running fine now.
