It squeals like a pig! Help please?

Post by boniclyd »

Just recently after the car sets for a period of time (8 hours or so)
it will squeal for a minute or two when I first crank it.
Then it stops and dosen't do it again, until it sets for a while.
But as far as cranking it up after it has ran, it does not squeal.
Also tonight I cranked it and cranked very slow like the battery was dead, then it just fired up.
Of course once it ran, then I tried cranking it, it fired up with no problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

My power steering belt does that. It'll sit there squeeling for maybe a minute before the engine starts to warm up a bit. Then its fine. It's cracked and needs replacing... I'll do that next week once I have some money.

its not hard to change the belts. if u can't fix things i take it to a maechanic. u probly make it worse j/k buy a mazda manual on the MX-3 mostly all the info u need to do basic things like tighting up a loose belt is in there.

when i was 18 i paid $110 to replace the value cover seal years later when i was 20 i didn't have the money to pay a mechanic so i did it myself $10-15 for the value cover seal $3-5 for the silicone and a 10mm socket wrench. when i realized who easy it was some people get it other don't. I did, i never took my car back to a mechanic did all my own stuff now i know how to rebuild mazda engine's 4cly & tranmissions its all easy to me. i steer clear from 6cly and auto's i hate working on them not enough room and to many parts.

thanks

I will be changing it out myself for sure. I normally do all my repair work myself. I have changed the disty and the radiator on this car so far.
It's just that it is a smaller engine to work on.
I had a 1970 mustang with a 351 cleveland and a 91 Chevy with 350,
so I'm used to more room and american made engines.
Thank for any and all advice.

I'm no mechanic but, I need all my limbs and money.

With engine cold the belts are cold too and if needing adjustment or replacement(if glazed) they slip and squeal. As the engine warms up, the belt warms up too and so tightens up a bit, which is when the squealing stops. With engine cold (turned off minimum of 1/2 hr.) check the belt tension on center of the longest belt span, using moderate pressure with your thumb. Deflection should be ~1/3-1/2 inch. If deflection is > than that, you need to snug it up. There is an adjustment bolt for this purpose and it is a very quick fix to do. Page B1-6 and B1-7 of the online manual link from the main mx-3.com page shows a nice diagram pic. http://www.mx-3.com/95manual
