Protege transmission question.

Post by MechaManZero »

I am trying to find an easier fix for the whole electrical to mechanical speedo situation. I was thinking changing the manual speedo in the tranny to an electrical. The Ford Escort GT seems to have one in the early 90s. Does anyone know if it would work.

Just get a speedo gear, cable & cluster from a SOHC. It will all plug & play with no problems.

if only someone had one that is willing to sell a whole assembly to me :( . I can't even afford it I get my paycheck every two weeks and got mine on friday, all spent on bills and parts. And next paycheck I need to buy that GTR ECU corksport is holding for me. So next paycheck I will be tapped out on cash also :(

I have one as well and it may work. You would need the plug that goes into it and figure out the wiring. Cut the factory harness and splice into the Fords plug but you'll need to know what wires do what. That shouldn't be too much of a hassle if you have a few wiring diagrams. 8)

I remember reading about the speedo probs with the v6 speedo. thats why I asked about the ford one. I just swapped a complete Protege wiring harness in my car, will the electric speedo still work. Is it part of the harness or is it seperate?

I think 93+ mx-6 has electric speedo sensor and it will fit the protege tranny.

Is the speedo wiring part of the 94-95 MX3 wiring harness cause I took that out and I put the protege one in.

I am not sure - but my assumption is that it shouldnt be part of the harness.... because the speedo wires go directly to the gauge cluster... Do you have one unconnected connector hanging around in the engine bay?

It will, but pray to god that it doesn't break the gear off the end and fall into the bottom of the trans. I've had problems with running that speedometer twice.

The harness for the speedometer is part of the main relay harness. The main computer harness for all the different sensors is seperated from that. If you swap the relay harness from the 90-94 Protege, the speedsensor connector will no longer be there because it uses the mechanical type.

Yes. I can't think of a reason why to even swap it. I'm still using mine.

I would give the ford's speedometer gear a try if all the info is there. I haven't researched it, but it looks promising.

the mx3 sensor will work if you make a 1/2 inch shim.

Why won't the Ford Escort GT's work? It's electronic unlike the Protege's. You would need the plug from the Ford's harness and cut it a couple inches back. The rest is all simple cut/splice wiring. The SOHC's were all cable driven, so that won't help with a conversion.
